Wheel Studs

When I had my bronco in the shop for getting balljoints done they over torqued my lug nuts causing my wheel studs to break. I am now replacing all of them and going to use a torque wrench this time. I was wondering though what kind of wheel studs to use that are heavy duty and wont fail on me.

Also, I know that i have to disassembly the entire hub to access the rotor to remove it, but is there any tips on getting the hub off? From what it looks like there is three or four snap rings and then it should pull right off??

I have the five point factory auto hubs btw.

Remove the five torq headed screws on the hubs, pull the hub off, remove small retainer on the snap ring, then remove the snap ring.

Inside on the axle there is a half round retainer that needs to be removed, then use the Dana 44 took to remove the first nut, then pull the ring off and loosen the second nut. Remove the caliper and the hold hub/disc assembly pulls off.

ARP and Moroso make good studs. Most any stud from an auto parts house should be fine.

Ok thanks, what exactly do you mean about the dana 44 tool? Is that just a socket eithier metric or US?

Thanks for the link but I just picked up at Oriellys Auto a 2 5/8 4 prong hub socket. I can't find anywhere if that is the right size or not? It looks like it should work fine.

2 5/8 OD is Dana 60 sized.

The tool you need is 2 3/8 OD.

Thanks again for the help, I got it all done today. Me and my dad did it in the driveway and not in our shop so it was a little more challenging but its done now. We put five new studs in, and this time I used a torque wrench set to 100lbs to torque them down. After taking apart the hub I really want to get some manual ones.

I just don't want to be 10 miles down the beach or out on some ranch roads and these auto's go out and Im screwed. Maybe my next purchase??

Can I swap my auto hubs off my '94 for manual hubs, or do I need change hub, spindle, etc. as well?

I never once had a problem with my auto hubs. That being said, your upgrade options depend on if your current hubs have 3 or 5 bolts.

3 bolts. I dont plan to change them if they are working ok, but just want to know my options if they play up. Thanks, Philo.

Those require a new spindle nut.

So the 3 bolt ones have that crazy winky-wonky hub nut? Do I need the std D44 inner/washer/outer nut? Sorry to be a dunce, but I have never seen them here in Aus.

ON topic of wheel studs if it comes up on a search.

The front wheel studs have a long knurl length and in 5/8, Currie was the easiest place to find them. Its not cool to order studs and tear the front end apart only to find out your knurl is too short. Luckily solo saved the day when this happened.

If you carry spare studs in your pit box like I do be sure they are long knurl.
