Re: Front Locker/ limited slip options
I am in the same boat I usually wont lock the front unless I know/think I will need 4wd. I have run with them locked in 2 quite a bit but that is usually because I needed them for one reason or another and was to lazy to unlock them after...lol What i have found is that with the rear locked about the only time I need 4WD is if I end up in ultra soft/deep sand (usually its for piece of mind) or I am pulling someone else out.
Prior to locking the rear I needed 4wd more frequently.

I loved running the Barge around in 4X. It cornered so well. Deep braking into corners was a dream as long as you didn't actually lock it up.

Re: Front Locker/ limited slip options
Here's another idea...Several years ago I was talking to Dave Ashley about the Rough Rider Bronco (it was for sale at the time). He said that they ran a viscous coupling in the front drive shaft that only sent 60% of the power to the front wheels. He said they did this to make the front diff and axles live bacause they ran it in 4wd all the time. Anyone ever played with this idea? Still wish I had bit the bullitt and bought the bronco.

Re: Front Locker/ limited slip options
I've been thinking about swapping to a fulltime 4wd transfer case like this. They are used in AWD Astro vans, Syclones, Typhoons, Bravadas, and explorers. However the Explorer unit is weak and I really have not found one suitable yet.
My belief is that most of the drive train will live with added give in the system. I really like how much smoother my truck is in 4wd while going through the whoops and turning.

Me too but I hated having to replace the perfectly good transfer case because the case was split.philofab wrote:I really like how much smoother my truck is in 4wd while going through the whoops and turning.

Re: Front Locker/ limited slip options
AWD is nice...sometimes. I prefer selectable 4wd in a non dedicated prerunner or race rig. If I had a trailer prerunner or race jeep or bronco it would be awd but it would also be stripped and prepped every race.
In the c3 jeep we swapped t-cases during a race twice in 16 races, both in longer baja races.
Its for sale for 49.5k...16 races, 15 wins, 1 dnf.

Re: Front Locker/ limited slip options
There was a selectable AWD transfer case in Expeditions as well. I have seen an old AWD Quadratrac in action in a certain Blazer, and man I don't think that is anything you want to own. He carried and used two spares to get through a race. If you had a full time unit in your highway rig, it would just burn a bunch of extra gas turning all that hardware.philofab wrote:I've been thinking about swapping to a fulltime 4wd transfer case like this. In 4X, all wheels lock at the same time unless you have a center diff........mkiefer wrote:btw if you to lazy to adjust your rear drums like i am then you cant lock it up anyways...

Re: Front Locker/ limited slip options
The Little Mac 7S used a Typhoon transfer case. Full time 4WD, torque split on it was something like 37/73. GM spent a lot of time playing with split ratios on the T-cases in those. Only downside to this is you need an oil pump and cooler (or 2) for the T-case.RSR wrote:Here's another idea...Several years ago I was talking to Dave Ashley about the Rough Rider Bronco (it was for sale at the time). Re: Front Locker/ limited slip options
Trueee what i meant is that when the drums dont work and you have pos a-zone pads and rotors it isnt an issue because the brakes dont work good enough to lock all 4 tires... And what about a newer escalade awd tcase? and its bolted to a 4l80e already too... and for that matter a 6.0 or a 6.2..BDKW1 wrote:In 4X, all wheels lock at the same time unless you have a center diff........mkiefer wrote:btw if you to lazy to adjust your rear drums like i am then you cant lock it up anyways...

Re: Front Locker/ limited slip options
There is the np203, righ?. It was sure nice in crappy weather to have the full time 4wd, but yeah those trucks were pretty bad on gas. I had a quadratrack Jeep J20 and a fulltime Blazer 20 years back or so. The cases were strong for the "wheelin'" I was doing. I think both those truck were running 37" tires on the trails. The jeep quadratrck was single speed if I remember correctly, Feckincrapola on that one.300 wrote:There was a selectable AWD transfer case in Expeditions as well. Re: Front Locker/ limited slip options
Yes the Quadratrac is single speed, and actually has a massive chain in it. The rear otuput shaft is in line with the front shaft, so you end up with an offset pumpkin in the rear as well. Actually, except for the single speed part, it would probably be pretty strong, but when you sling the driveshaft off repeatedly, all the bets are off!

np203s are ungodly heavy, very large and suck a lot of power too.

Speaking of the the Little Mac 7s, my Brother in law owns it. It's for sale if anyone is interested.BDKW1 wrote:The Little Mac 7S used a Typhoon transfer case.
