Usually the gate and the mounting brackets/hardware at the trans are different.

I think you'll be OK with the throw. I used a B&M 3 speed shifter on an AOD.

By the way, if you're going to run an AOD, look into a Lentech valve body.

As you know AODs have only 3 forward shift positions just like a C4/6.
I have a B&M shifter on my AOD (72 Bronco) and the instuctions are for Ford & Chevy with and adapter for each. The shifter is universal and it came with an acceptable cable.
Download the install instuctions for the AC unit and I bet it will be the same deal as the B&M.
Dont worry about the shift pattern. When done you will have P,R,N,D,2,1 Works like stock.
Mounting is your deal. Your TV cable S/B unchanged from what you have.

Here is how mine looks, as you can see there are seperate gate sections for an aod like mine it is p,r,n,3,2,1. When I ordered my shifter they sent me one for a aode. The gate pattern is the same but you might need to make a piece for the linkage inside the tranny. The aode one would not work with my aod. Check that before you buy it. It does not just connect on the outside, it is inside as well.

So does the Art Carr shifter for an e40d have 1234-N-R-D-P?

The way it was explained to me if you tranny has an electric switch to lock out OD then you will need a switch not a 4th position on the shifter.
A reverse body shifter for a Ford tranny will be p,r,n,1,2,3. The standard valve body is shown in the picture p,r,n,3,2,1. 3 could be drive or just 3 depending on the valve body you bought.
For an e4od put the thing in 3 and control the od with an electric switch on the dash of on the shifter knob.
Bottom line is don't fight the design. The shifter only controls 3 positions not 4. You cannot change that.
Paul
PS: My B&M came with bits that allowed it to work with several chevy and several Ford trannys. AOD & AODE included. Of course I never used anything except the AOD parts. (for the 72 not the 96). I am pretty sure the AODE works just like the E4OD. Meaning a switch is needed to control OD.
