Ford 9 Inch Help

Post by Randyg12 »

1971 F100

I pulled the rear end last weekend to rebuild. Pretty sure it has never been apart.

Here's my dilemma:

Pulled the axles and the third. While pulling the axle shafts out, I noticed quite a bit of bearing play. They were toast. Turns out the inner races were spinning on the shaft (just perfect for bearings, ya know?).

So because of this, a nice groove was worn into the axle shaft.

The axles are equal length, 30". Housing is 61.25 WMS to WMS.

I can't seem to find the right axles, without getting custom ones.

Would also like to move from the big sealed bearings to tapered roller bearings.

Any insight would help.

Here's a video (if it works) of the bearings when I pulled them.

Unless the right length stock axles fall out of the sky for you, spend the $$$ and get some aftermarket axles. I believe that Currie said they had a lifetime warranty on their 31 spline axles when I bought some years ago. At that time it was only something like $300 for the pair. I don't have enough experience with the tapered bearings to offer any recommendations. Always had the sealed bearings and changed them often.
