Re: McQueen Glass

Re: McQueen Glass
RMC, Robert is correct. That right rear fender was just slapped up to the truck and it stuck there. Ask robert he will verify, he saw me do it. Thats how well it fits. Yes we are planning to bond it on with Marglass, its an experiment to see how well it will work. This truck is used in prerunning by McCarthy racing, so it will see abuse. Its going to be painted and stickered.Rmc wrote:When you say bonded, meaning glued and no visible body line or no bolt heads and screws externally?
We will keep you posted on the results, its about a month out from being completed.

The set coming off the truck will fire sale at $200, for the person who wants them. Fronts and rear, Chopper gun specials with no brand name.

Re: McQueen Glass
I used 3m panel bond for my rear quarters. Came out nice and only used a few pop rivets along the topside for the curing process. They are easily filled with a good body filler. Inalso filled the transition between the glass edge and the body along my c pillar (bronco's b pillar).

Re: McQueen Glass
JB, does the 3m panel bond come in a tube, and is it black? Ive heard of this material, but never used it. Have heard that it is pricy, which doesnt matter if it is good stuff.

Re: McQueen Glass
It comes in a double tube and has a special mixing tip. Norton sells different setup times from 5minutes to 2 hours iirc. The double tube sucks because they want you to buy there special gun. I made a double plunger setup out of sheet metal and some tubing in a normal caulk gun. Worked just fine. I think i paid around $60 for it with four mixing tips. Ill look tomorrow and see if i still have the stuff laying around and snap a pick for ya.

Thank you sir. Im always interested in new (unfamiliar to me) products. There is an epoxy called "methal crylate" which is so strong its unbelievable. But its not needed in this type of job.Jbfab wrote:It comes in a double tube and has a special mixing tip. Norton sells different setup times from 5minutes to 2 hours iirc. Re: McQueen Glass
How hard is it to remove the glass if it gets damaged with 3m bonding?

Re: McQueen Glass
If it was damaged to the point of needing replacement you would have to cut it off then grind down the adhesive. It would be messy but worth it inmho to not have any fasteners.

Re: McQueen Glass
Well we put the fenders (rear) on with marglass yesterday, came off with out a problem. It took two of us a total of 6 hours to cleanup and bend metal and fit (with clecos) then bond on. Will get pics today. before and after we do the minimal bodywork necessary.

Re: McQueen Glass
Did you guys take a piece of scrap and glue it on something to see how hard it was to break off after curing? I guess kind of a curiosity question. I'm hoping its stronger than the glass.

Re: McQueen Glass
Im referring to The bond between metal and fiberglass not the glue itself.

Re: McQueen Glass
It works just fine. Ive bonded the two (metal and glass) with marglass many times before without a problem. Preperation is the name of the game. Coarse sanding, prefitting, cleaning, taping off the area before bonding. All the little things inexperianced builders overlook. The final cleanup took less than 30 minutes. The dessert will be the final test. Do I recommend the average person to do this, absolutely not.

Re: McQueen Glass
I'm with mike on this. Lots of prefitting and prep to make thing fit before the goo goes down. I had to drop my upper rail about an 1/8" the whole length the get proper fitment.
