Not NAPA Starters

Post by 1Hondalover »

Guys I'm not trying to be an ass here, but would appreciate feedback from only those with bonafide hands on experience, not my "sister's boyfriend's dad had" or "I saw one of those".

Jim & Paige's 427 is done and I'm gathering the external accessories, one of which is need for a starter. Prerunner yes race truck no and COST IS an issue, but all the while we don't need crap halfway to Cabo on one of our peninsula fun runs.

So Vatozone and even NAPA are not choices.....if they'd even spin the engine though not high compression by design. Not including the $600 likes of Meziere, I'm looking at things that seem like they're quality and the real deal for about $300 or less.

On my current list are Ford Performance, Powermaster (they have three models), Hi Torque (IMI models), not sure Tilton 40000 Series will fit the budget, and then lightly things like MSD, CVR, and CSR. I crossed out Proform because Taiwan.

Can any of you share experience or thoughts about any of these or others in the range? Obviously SBF but for purposes of manufacturer I don't think that matters.

Strange I find little starter discussion even on RDZ in the shop sections. Anyone know what the race trucks are using?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Jim, I have the Powermaster on my Bronco. The MasterTorque version. It has worked great for many years on my 302. I will be using the same one when my stroker is done.

This is what I'm using. To me, starters aren't a 'budget' item, especially if you are using an auto trans. Spend now, cry once and enjoy the reliability. Last thing you need is the starter to crap out 300 miles from an auto parts store ;)

Just curious what is wrong with a stock ford unit?
My stock unit was good after 15 years in the desert and a huge number of miles.
My latest starter for the EB is from NAPA and made in china. Not worried it will be a problem. Hey it is just a starter - right?

Thanks for the feedback Guys.....think I'll go with a Powermaster XS.

Hi Torque IMI is attractive since they're in relatively local in L.A., but in the middle of Baja I guess that doesn't matter much.

Similar experiences as me. I used a reman'd Motorcraft unit on my EB for well over 100K and about 20 years worth of use. Replaced it because it was getting a little noisy but still worked fine. Now running a $100 Bosch unit from Rockauto without problems.

I use all Powermaster stuff on the race Bronco and the Super Duty chase truck. Never had any issues with their starters. Actually never had any issues with the Motorcraft unit on the Super Duty, but at 350K miles, I took it off and carry it as a spare and bolted in a Powermaster.
