guard...Appreciate that. Yeah, that road noise, and suspension squeaks, and fumes, and dust...all gone now! Yup, stock tire carrier...at least for now. It's hanging in there, except the swing arm bushings need replacing with some new bronze ones (the originals melted during the powder coating...yes, too lazy to get them pulled apart. :oops: ) So for now, it's holding up just fine...and this after I was rear-ended by a lady in a Ford Edge back in 2011. Minimal damage to my Bronco...her Edge crumbled like it had hit a brick wall...

I was able to put the full size 35x12.5-15 spare on with extra long lug nuts. This allowed the wheel to barely engage the threads, and then compress the back side of the tire against the swing arm of the carrier, stabilizing it a bit, as I tightened the lugs down. I just spot check the mounting bolts every month or so and make sure everything is still holding in there. Possibly a heavy duty tire carrier some day (modifications to the rear bumper to take all the weight off the tailgate...), but for now, she's holding together.

Utah BroncoSpeed - 18 Months Later...ICE Update!

ICE (In-Car Entertainment) Install Update...this last spring, I had a car stereo local shop (Drive In Audiosound, Murray, Utah) install my new stereo in my Bronco, consisting of:
  • Head Unit: Sony #MEX-GS810BT AM/FM/CD HD BT Radio
  • Amplifier: Massive Audio #BX4 (4 x 120W) 'Nano BiT' Amp
  • F Door Speakers: Kicker #DS65 (6.75" 2-way oversized)
  • R Speakers: Kicker #DS693 (6x9 3-way...modified to fit the OEM 6x8 openings)
...and I couldn't be happier. The new "quiet" interior combined with the Massive Audio 120W/channel amplifier and those Kickers...resulted in a total transformation of the interior.

I wanted an HD radio, and when I heard about this particular model from Sony, I waited for almost a year before it was released late last Fall to the USA...and I am glad I waited. The HD radio is just great, and since I listen to a lot of FM (classic rock, jazz), and even a fair amount of talk radio, it was well worth the wait to get THAT model with just the features I wanted.

I purchased the radio from Crutchfield (got the extra Metra installation kit and wiring harness for free,) and James at Drive In Audiosound put it all together with a Scosche amp installation kit, mounted the Massive Audio amp up underneath the dash...securely...and then adjusted the audio levels to produce some amazing sound.

Cost:
  • o Sony MEX-GS810BT Radio: $240 (Crutchfield...included free Metra #70-1770 wiring harness, and Metra #30-5512C faceplate kit)
    o Massive BX4 Amp: $250 (Drive In Audiosound)
    o Scosche E-1000 4 Ga. Amp Kit w/ RCA cables: $70.00 (Drive In Audiosound)
    o Speakers: Kicker speakers (4): $108 (Amazon)
    o Installation: $257
Total: ~$925.00

Utah BroncoSpeed - Dual Remote Oil Filter System...

After wanting to do this for years now (and eliminate...permanently the messy oil filter changes with the stock filter location...grrrr...), I had one of my local performance shops, Addit 2 Your Toy here in Sandy, UT, do the install of a complete dual remote oil filter system a few weeks back...

The new system included:
  • Derale/TransDapt #1030 Dual Remote Filter Mount (for FL-1A sized filters)
  • Earl's #1178 Remote Filter Adapter
  • Misc. Earl's Flare Fittings & Hose Ends (-10AN)
  • Braided SS Hose (-10AN)
  • Motorcraft FL-1A Filters (2 EA) [to be replaced with a pair of the yellow Purolator #PL30001 'Pure One' filters at next oil change...]
And Joe, the owner of Addit (a Vietnam Vet with the 101st Abn Div...) did a great job (as usual.). I had him install the remote mount where the old OEM air box was located, and after fabricating a mounting pad (and re-securing the old radiator overflow/windshield washer fluid tanks), everything came together like a charm. Joe used Earl's -10AN fittings instead of the Jegs, but other than that, everything went as planned.

After a two minor leaks :roll: were fixed: 1.) Where the -10 flare fitting went into the remote mount, and 2.) A minor "oozing" leak on the top of the Derale dual remote mount (yes, oil was actually seeping through the top of the casting along where the ribs are...through some small fissures obviously due to poor casting techniques and quality control...hmmmm) by using some marine-grade JB Weld (which is the dark grey filler you see on the top of the filter pad), all is well!

Now oil changes are a snap...no fuss, no muss! That, and I've increase my oil capacity by at least a quart (the second oil filter + the added capacity within the hoses themselves), and have a nice way to route a remote oil filter, AND install an oil pressure sending unit too!

Robert...no I did not. My Bronco has the 302, and I was under the impression that only the 351w engine came with a factory sandwich cooler. Regardless, mine did not have it...just the spin on filter pad.

I want to try a forced air cooler someday. Maybe something like a Derale #13700, and locate it up front where I could position it w/o blocking the normal airflow to the radiator...or maybe a combo engine oil/transmission 'dual circuit' fluid cooler, like the Derale #15200:

After purchasing the Bassani #50150BC headers and then hanging them in my garage for the last 3.5 years :cry: ...just "waiting for the right day..." I finally got them installed by my local Master Muffler shop, and their top technician/fabricator Don.

They went on fairly easily, but they encountered some minor challenges during the process:
  • Spring buckets/shock towers, AACS air filter/MAF tubing/mounts, and shock tower cross bar impeded progress by limiting easy and open access from the top side of the engine
  • The coupling flares on the down pipes weren't 'flared' enough to cover the end of the Bassani collectors, necessitating some new down pipes
  • ...but that actually turned out OK, as the shop knew they had to weld in new oxygen sensor bungs just below the flare (as the Bassani 501050BC headers do not have the O2 bung welded into the collector as delivered from the factory), and having new downpipes allowed for easier welding
  • The passenger side header was seriously close to the frame and the starter...almost necessitating a small frame notch near one of the primary tubes (I still may have them do that as the clearance is about 1/8th of an inch)
  • The passenger side header also came near the RF wheel brake line (as the line was relocated slightly when the Autofab suspension was installed)...so that was slightly modified to add a few more inches of clearance...and I will most likely put a heat shield wrap on the brake line and a thermal blanket wrap on the starter...just in case
  • Will need to figure out how to secure the top end of the dipstick, as the bracket it once bolted to is now gone
So far, the engine runs great, no CEL, and is no louder than before. However, I think I have to get through that "OBDII drive cycle" to get it to be ready for for my Utah State emissions and safety inspection next month (and once all the sensors are 'calibrated', the CEL won't come on!) :?:

I love it, Brad. Great upgrades! I considered 6x9's in my Explorer when I replaced the stock speakers but didn't feel like cutting up the door panel. I bet they're a huge improvement, though.

Bronco is looking great! I highly suggest jumping on the Y pipe from Bassani as well, it works fantastic!

Looks like you have some nice upgrades going on there. I think we're going to saddle up a set of Bassani's with a Y pipe shortly, but I'm concerned about the header clearance for reasons you discuss plus the non-OE things we have going on. I like this picture.....any chance I could get you to take a shot of each side straight down from the top so I can see how they look protruding off the heads? If it's OK I may ask for a measurement or two after I see the pics.

Of course if any of the other GFB crew have such info I'd be happy to see it.

Thanks Steve! 6x9's are a huge improvement indeed (and being 3-ways helps a lot too)...especially in the clarity of the music. That and the amplifier just made a huge difference. Of course, the new quiet interior with all of the sound-proofing and carpeting was a big upgrade too! :mrgreen:

Hey Tony, thanks. I REALLY want an upgraded Y-pipe, but Bassani doesn't have one specific to the 5.0 engine for the '96 MY. :cry: Bassani has the #50150B5 after-cat system, but I already have a 3" system after the second converter. However, Magnaflow does have a Y-Pipe...#93342 pictured below (around $378.00 from various web suppliers)...which is still a 2-Cat (inline) set-up. Not sure if I'll gain anything, but it is all stainless steel! Thoughts?

Thanks 1Hondalover. Be happy to take some photos...the best I can from the top down. I'm on a business trip to Ohio this week, but I'll try to get a shot this weekend when I get home. Hopefully that will help you. Note that it's tight on the passenger side (due to the protruding A/C housing), but I'll do my best.

Before I bought the Bassani headers, I was actually debating taking the cast iron manifolds off, sand blasting them, perform some minor porting and clean-up, smoothing the outside cast finish, and then having them HPC coated (they're right near me here in Sandy, Utah), or painted with VHT 'Flame-Proof' 1300-2000 Degree F Silica Ceramic paint (rattle-can.)...with the intended effect of marginally better flowing manifolds, improving their overall appearance (see picture below of smoothed and coated Chevy rams-horn exhaust manifolds...), and keeping the no-maintenance nature of the OEM cast iron!

So here are my two cents Brad. I noticed a decent (read minor) seat of the pants upgrade with the basani headers. Flowed better, ran nicely. I noticed a BIG improvement when I swapped over to the y pipe. 3" all the way through and she feels healthy!!

A good friend of mine did the magnalfow and he also likes it a lot, so that may be the way to go.

Great build Brad! At least I'm not the only one who has seemingly waited years to start their bronco build. Im just getting around to mine as well. Better late than never I guess.

About the Y pipe from Bassani. I do believe they make one specific to your 5.0 (Part #: 50150B3/150500) for '95 which just requires you to add another O2 bung (or two) along the way. I think this is the route taken by most with the same model year. Autoanything.com has for around 425 bucks. I've considered this route for myself but may look into the Magnaflow option as well. I've always like what they do.

Tony...good info and feedback, thanks. I honestly haven't felt anything "seat of the pants"-wise with the Bassanis as I probably haven't fully completed the OBDII drive cycle...where the computer has learned how to handle the headers. In due time I guess. 3" is a HUGE increase in primary Y-pipe diameter...but then again you have the 351w. I remember when I talked my Dad into putting true dual exhaust with "Turbo" mufflers on our family's '72 Buick Centurion Sedan with the 455 and 4bbl 'Quadratoilet' carb (back in '76 when "Turbo" mufflers were all the rage.) We upgraded the entire system to 2-1/4" pipe the entire way and that was probably more that enough. Oh, and it sounded awesome! I do like that Magnaflow #93324 as it mimics the stock configuration (inline cats), but unfortunately retains the 2" primaries going from the headers to the first catalytic converter. 96UAV below has an idea too...decisions decisions! :roll:

Thanks 96UAV. That #50150B3 is quite the departure from the stock configuration! Agreed...I'd have to install bungs in the downpipes, and another O2 bung after each of the two individual parallel cats. Not sure how that would work since I only have a single O2 sensor after my second inline cat. Do folks "Y" the two outlets back into one and then feed that to a single muffler? Hmmmm. :?

I found that latemodelperformance.com is selling the #50150B3 (http://www.lmperformance.com/25522?gcli ... Atwt8P8HAQ)for $379 and free shipping too! But the shop that does my emissions inspections (usually they never open the hood to perform a visual since it's OBDII, so they just hook up their computer to my OBD port) may say something about this type of change over...not sure. But hey, it still, "has two catalytic converters," right? It's just that they're parallel and not serial. 8-) Again, decisions decisions!

Yeah I actually "started" my pre-runner build probably back in '94...when I moved to Hollister, CA. I had numerous business trips to SoCal throughout the 90's, so I would fly down a day early and take my rental car out to various fab shops throughout Orange and LA counties and do my research (some real characters back then...and some real fly-by-night shops too.) But I learned a lot, and took copious notes (e.g., Lesson #1: Start with a Safety Cage.) But what I wasn't sure of was what platform I wanted to build on. Then I saw the Goodman Bronco prerunner about 10 years ago, and I was hooked. Seats 4, 4x4, long travel TTB options through Autofab, and they were plentiful. Done deal.

So yes, I purchased my Bronco XL 5.0 in 2008 (from a Utah realtor who kept it in great shape) right after attending the Off-Road Expo in Pomona. The fabrication started in May'ish of 2009 with my local Utah fabricators...and they finished the core build 10 months later in March of 2010. Since the, it's be a 'continuous improvement' cycle of refinement and upgrades to get it to where it is today.

Next mini-projects:
  • Install the XLT gauge panel with the factory tachometer,
  • Install my 'new' Saginaw P/S pump to replace the Ford C-III pump,
  • Do a "Big 3" wiring upgrade,
  • Have a mini center console built and install my Ham 2M/440 radio (Kenwood TM-V7A), my 10M/11M (CB) radio (RCI-2950), and some GlowShift MaxTow 'DoubleVision" gauges (Oil Pressure, H2O Temp, and Voltage,)
  • Replace my crusty & cracked OEM chrome grill/headlight surrounds with some new aftermarket pieces painted white to match the body color

That should keep me busy for the next few years.

Today I'm starting my center console design, and will soon kick off it's fabrication, and then install of my two Ham radios (Kenwood TM-V7A 2M/440 and Ranger RCI-2950 10M), along with some gauges from GlowShift...and of course an assortment of cup holders...natch!

Gotta' get all this done before I head up to support the Idaho Rally International (Rally – idahorally.com) up near Boise as a Special Stage Comms Captain in early June, and the Kat'cina Mosa 100KM Mountain Run (Kat?cina Mosa Homepage | Mountain Oasis Adventure Runs) ultra marathon through the Wasatch Mountains above Provo, UT as a Aid Station Comms support in early August!

(I'm still considering a flush mount gated shifter from Art Carr/Winters ([/i]#337-1, E4OD regular pattern) for the center console...but...I still haven't made up my mind on that. Besides, how would I route the OD button from the stalk? I guess folks just move the toggle to the dash... E4OD Shifter - GoFastBroncos.com)
