Death wobble at 55

Post by Hazard235 »

Hi GFB
I bought this 1990 xlt a few weeks ago....besides the power steering leak it seemed fine until i took it out...around 55 it starts to shake....i looked at the tires and they seemed to be a lil warped as this truck sat a while. The tread wearing is not that normal looking. And another issue when going 40ish on dirt roads its fine but if i go slow over something like a small ditch the front end just cracks and pops like crazy any suggestions? Thanks

Check the entire front end for worn components. Rotate the tires and see if the wobble changes. If you can't find it, take it to a (good) alignment/undercar shop and have them check it for you.

The shaking might be caused by the tires deteriorating and falling apart or a balance issue. You can check this by rotating them and see if the shaking moves from front to back or one side to the other. The cracking/popping could be ball joints or steering ends.

I've fixed this on a few jeeps and from what I've seen, usually it's the steering joints on the knuckle.
