Rex , White (OJ bronco) build!

Post by Trex »

Hello

I'm building a 1992 Bronco pre-runner (in a past life I had a fully built 91 F-150, but I rolled it...)

Bought his off a guy in LA w/ (don't ask paid to much)
- Stroked 302, Comp cam, scorpion roller rockers, edelbrock 3881 intake, Y-pipe, scat bottom end, KN cold air intake, AL heads
- Also drilled the front/rear for 5/8 studs and mounted my freshly powder coated methods with 35 Bfgs
- I also built this bumper with a swing down tire carrier (not done yet)

Bumper is looking good.

What is the hex welded in the end cap of the bumper there for?

Thanks man, the hex is for holding the torsion bar. The other end hooks into the tire carrier and will reduce the force needed to pull it up.

Finally got this bumper done, if I did it again I would bring the bottom up a bit more

Also add a MPI steering wheel, these are the PNs I used from summit, I was able to keep the cruise control by using the stock ford slip ring

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/grt-4009 (this guy was of poor quality I had to drill out my wheel to get all the bolts in)

Also pulled a front end from the junkyard, gonna cut/turn and extend!

Finally gonna do something a bit different for the radius arms, I'm gonna do radius links! My main concerns are getting the bottom link up as high as possible which I think will be limited by the body mount. I also want to figure out what the best top down angle is. I want the links to attach to the beams close to the shock and spindle mount but don't want to limit turning radius to much.

Ok finally was able to make some progress on my beams. Had a guy bend up some C-shaped parts, best 140$ I have ever spent. Next up, I got some 1" by 3.5" 4140 plate on order to help kick out the bottom ball joint mount.

Thanks, Here are a couple pics of how I modified the 5 bolt -> 6 bolt adapter to run the wires out. The bracket is from the sock set up, i just ground it flat to sit between the two adapters. The second pic shows the connector coming out of the stock Ford slip ring (not shown), the only mod I made to the adapter is I had to drill a hole in the plate sits in the bottom of the adapter.

My buddy and I discussed that radius arm design. I like the idea of it but I found several epic fail pics of them. Running the two links like that takes a lot of the strength of the radius arm. I know people have done it successfully but I don't know if the performance gains (if any) are worth the reliability loss.

Not trying to deter you but I just thought its worth the discussion.

For sure, my thought are the links provide caster control which helps steering return/feel. Also because you steer very often improvements here would be a benefit. I do think links are not as strong in bending as a traditional radius arm setups so anything that hits the bottom link is a concern. I would love to see an pics of failures (always great to learn from broken parts). I'm running my links with a FK RSMX14T (1" shank, next size down from the 1 1/4" people normally run) on one end and a threaded bushing with 1-1/4" thread on the other side, bolt size is 5/8" on both ends with all 4130 bungs and tube with 1.75" .120" wall (I plan on heat treating). I figure these links can handle at least 45,000 lbf in tension/compression so I'm hoping if I don't crash in to a rock they won't break. I do plan on pushing the links up as much as I can I'm actually gonna trim the body mount.

Aslo I'm pretty sure the old Dave Ashely truck had this setup (check out this vintage video I found of it)

Yes the Ashley truck had that setup.

This truck had them as well, but I'm not sure it was ever completed & run.

Small update, got my front end back from laser cut, managed to fit everything on a single 3' X 3' sheet of 3/16 4130, I'm also stoked on the lower ball joint mount just need to make a jig to locate it.
