Check the codes on the computer. It should narrow the problem down.

There are plenty of sensors and connections to check before diving into a new motor. There could be a number of things that are making it lose power.

Run a self test to pull codes. Just because the check engine light is not on does not mean that there isen't something out of whack!

Here are some articles to help out, also get a Haynes manual to reference figures for voltage/resistance for every sensor on the vehicle.

Thanks for the info. I had a new motor already planned to was hoping to minimize the time and money I put into this one. My other issue is that I am a CPA so I am basically out of time during the season to work on this thing. I was hoping to just sneak in a day trip here and there, not spend my one free day diagnosing things. But I'm sure I'll get it figured out. Thanks again for the input guys.

So went through just about everything I could think and all checked out. Went to drive the bronco onto the trailer and suddenly lost all power. While trying to turn it over again I heard an arching sound from the battery located behind the passenger seat. When I pulled the battery the negative terminal was completely melted.

I've heard a loose connection can cause excessive draw. Any chance that could cause some strange issues with how it was running? I'm trying to get a new battery tomorrow to test but have a busy day with the family.

So I have been messing with the bronco a bit, basically guessing as to what could be causing the complete loss of power while it starts and idles fine. I have an OBD1 code reader arriving tomorrow that may help, but I have been unable to keep my mind off it. Hooked up a fuel pressure gauge to it and its at 28 during idle and drops to 20 during load (including being in gear and neutral). I will replace the fuel regulator tonight and possible the fuel pump this weekend. Any thoughts on the fuel pressure readings?

Thanks.

Fuel pump! Should be at least 44psi. Also did you rewire when you pulled stock cluster out?

Hey thanks Brandon. I will replace the fuel pump this weekend, but what I should do is buy your motor! I did not rewire when I pulled the stock cluster, but it had been disconnected for a few trips and seemed to run fine. Is it worth plugging back in just to see?

You may have a charging issue. Battery looks like it was a loose terminal but if it is not charging it will pull all power from battery causing extra current draw from battery possibly amplifying the issue. I know newer broncos require a jumper at the cluster to complete the circuit and allow charging they do it through a bulb you can do it through and idiot light as well. It is patiently waiting for you lol.

Well the bronco is running. Thanks for all of the input and guidance guys. I am not 100% sure what it was that fixed it because I did a handful of things at once, but I did not end up replacing the fuel pump. I believe it was the regulator. As long as I get a few more trips out of this motor I will be very happy, then I can do a swap in the summer.

Picked up some lights from Tony on Friday. They turned out great, I am really impressed with the quality. The plan was to just let them sit for a month or two but I was too excited, had to get them in before my next trip. Probably a bad idea because I only have an hour or two this week before taking the bronco out for the weekend. I have been wanting a new grille so I'll try and do that as well if I can find one this week.

Can anyone confirm which fiberglass is on this? Some big changes coming up for the bronco. The glass and autofab hood will be for sale shortly. I will post in the for sale section once I confirm the fiberglass.

Thanks.

They trimmed the rear to look like fiberwerx/McNeil but the rounded top definitely Autofab.
