Made a day trip down to the Arroyo Tampiado mud caves with fam. Weather was perfect and the Bronco did great. 202 miles round trip, and she kept purring the whole time. This thing keeps impressing me everytime we go out.

Running open diff on stock gears is fun, but not that fun. Time for an upgrade.

The pile is getting bigger...

Finally did the 3G 130a amp upgrade. Woke up to a dead battery and an even deader alternator. (Deader? Seriously?) New Die Hard (Dekka) battery and reman alt from Napa. PN was for a 94 Mustang. Wiring upgrade was super simple thanks to a diagram I found posted by Philo. Helped a lot. While I was in there, new starter and new 1/0 battery cables on both sides. Ordered them from custombatterycables.com. They have ready to go sets for Bronco/F150s. Highly recommend. Everything went together smoothly. Birdco came by and made some 6g alternator cables for the solenoid and breaker.

Started the "Sixlitre tuneup". Cap, rotor, 9mm Ford wired, MSD Street Fire coil. Just need to gap the plugs and advance the timing

As mentioned in the tech thread, new steering wheel is in....

I went to the junkyard last week searching for derby car parts and stumbled upon an '04 Expedition and the center console was still in it. They wanted half of what eBay is asking so I jumped on it. Using the factory mounts made this an "easy" install. Race radio will be mounted in the cubby along with the switch panel for lights and fans. ImageImage

I started to get a nasty shake when turning. Sector shaft had some play, so time for a steering box. I looked into my options (Redhead, PSS, etc) and wanted to keep it "desert repairable". I ended up doing a Napa "4 bolt" 1 ton steering box swap. The box is for an Excursion (PN PS39-1018). It has a 32 spine shaft so the Bronco pitman arm still works. I got the pressure line for the Excursion (PN NPS7-3506) and all the fittings work. I tested them on a stock Bronco pump before I left Napa. No leaks so far and steering feels tighter. I also swapped out the drop pitman arm for a stock since I don't have drop brackets. Time for an alignment....ImageImageImage

100% bolt on? What beefier about it?

Yes, the casting is identical so it bolts right up. From the info I gathered, the gears are larger and have been known to last longer than the 2 bolt. I don't have any experience with that other than my 2 bolt just took a shit at 160k miles. It also has a slightly tighter turn ratio than the 2 bolt at 4 turns lock to lock.

Does it have a faster ratio or the same battle ship steering response that the bronco s have always had?

Its got 1/16 less turn, so not too much faster. But the slop is gone and just "feels better". Once I get the alignment done I'm sure I'll really notice a difference. Since switching back to a stock pitman arm, Ive got a lot of camber and the front end is riding high.

I read that the 03-08 Dodge 1 ton steering boxes are also identical, yet have 3 turns lock-to-lock. Might be worth looking into. Fitting sizes will be different I'm sure.

Got the headers on with some help from Darren birdco85. Summit Pacesetters. I know they're not Bassani, but I'm a baller on a budget! I used the Stage 8 fasteners, so hopefully no leaks. I've heard good things. Snagged a Saginaw pump for a core and bracket from the junkyard and made the swap. Should help push this 1 ton steering box around. Gonna add a cooler I've got. With the headers, came a smog delete. No more cats or EGR. I'm lucky enough to be registered in a smog exempt zip. Buzzed on a collector I picked up off eBay which worked out much better than I thought it would. Gonna add a Magnaflow glasspack, because I like loud noises.....

That is all for now.ImageImageImage
