95 XL hunting truck
95 XL hunting truck
Ok, so if I am in the wrong place just put me out of my misery quickly. I want to set this truck up for day hunting trips in Az. The goal is to make the stock truck better for this. So, after what I have read.....I was thinking of rebuilding the front end and adding Moog CC824 springs. I have the Ford Alcoa rims (I think they are forged) which I want to keep. I was gonna run 33x10.50 to fit on those rims. Probably change the gears to 4.11s. Hopefully, install some kind of locker in the front. The truck already has manual hubs. The tires should weigh 47lbs and the springs are rated spring rate is 366 load is 1442. So, what I don't know is what shock to run and if this set up is as good as I think. From what I have read it would only take 1.75 degrees to align. I like to haul a$$ down these Az back roads to my hunt but, I need to keep the truck as a DD. I gotta get my kids to soccer and I want to go 80mph on the Interstate.
Thanks for any advice,
Chris

Welcome to the board, Chris! I moved your thread to this section. You can post pics, ask questions, and update as you like.
Re: 95 XL hunting truck
Thanks for moving it. I just bought the truck a week ago. replaced the A/C yesterday (damn hot here). The exhaust is next new y pipe high flow cat and muff (keepn stock exhaust manifolds). Getting the susp dialed in is gonna be the most important to me right now.

Re: 95 XL hunting truck
If you ask me a set if extended radius arms, some decent shocks and your in business. Good luck with the build.
Re: 95 XL hunting truck
These things rock close to stock. I'd suggest keeping an eye out for the factory dual front shock hoop if you dont have one (they can be had pretty cheap) and run good shocks like bilstiens. With good suspension bushing and sway bars disconnected you should be able to get everywhere with it. If your realistic with what you want out of it and dont start throwing rad racecar parts at it you could have a really dialed hunting rig for a reasonable price.

Ive got a set of 4inch Rancho springs if your interested, im in mesa. Id take 80 bucks for them. Welcome to the site!
Re: 95 XL hunting truck
It has the quad shock set up with the stock motorcraft shocks!! I really appreciate what guys on this site have done with their trucks (cut and turns etc). I need the truck as a DD so I have to keep myself reeled in and quite honestly, I don't have the talent to do that stuff anyhow. I have been using 90 4runner with 30s on it to this point and doning pretty good so that is my base line for what I want out of this truck.Seabass wrote:These things rock close to stock. So... I have seen different opinions on ride quality when guys run different coils and shocks. You think I should run the CC824 coils with the bilstiens?

Re: 95 XL hunting truck
Im sure that combo will be light years ahead of the clapped out factory stuff you have now. If its just a DD and hunting rig id just go through and replace are the wear items, ball joints, tierod ends, control arm bushings... things like that. Moog sp

Re: 95 XL hunting truck
Spring and a set of Bilsteins will be plenty.
Re: 95 XL hunting truck
I was under the impression that the only time anybody extended their radius arms was when they lifted the truck to the point that they had to change things to keep all the geometry right. Your saying I can benefit from extended arms even when I just use leveling coils?Rmc wrote:If you ask me a set if extended radius arms, some decent shocks and your in business. Re: 95 XL hunting truck
I apprec the offer on the springs I was trying to keep my changes subtle as possible to get 33s under the truck and the way I understand it with 4in springs I would have to change pivot points to get my alignment back. I am glad to hear what you have to say about just rebuilding the frontend and adding good shocks (thats good news).RyanDS650X wrote:Spring and a set of Bilsteins will be plenty.
Re: 95 XL hunting truck
I think he ment leveling coils. Taking the sway bars off on mine made a huge difference. I'd suggest trying it and making a qick disconnect set up for transitioning from hunting rig to kid taxi.
You may even be able to get by without the leveling coil even. With my 1.5" coil im rolling around on 35s with just rrimming the front bumper a bit.

Those coils are 4 inch lift not leveling coils right?RyanDS650X wrote:Ive got a set of 4inch Rancho springs if your interested, im in mesa. Id take 80 bucks for them. Welcome to the site!

Re: 95 XL hunting truck
No I ment extended radius arms. Just because this is a hunting rig dosnt mean he won't be rolling down roads with rocks that occasionally would leave a tire up in the air. Basically the stock radius arms will limit your droop travel at high or low speed. My 2 cents is if he were to have either front tire at a point of droop it would be benifical to droop until the spring limits the down travel vs a radius arm bushing causing the droop bind point. The only other reason I suggest this is if you found your self between some rocks on a rocky fire road the sooner you regain traction the quicker you can get going where u want to be. I think for what your intended use is a set of the bilstine 5160 ( the silver ones with the built in resivoir ) would be a great upgrade. As far as cut and turn and all that stuff you won't need to worry about that until you decide more ground clearance is needed for even more remote hunting destinations. As we all know the farther u get from town the rougher and less maintained the roads get. Must for you is decent tires ( no street radials) you'll blow the sidewalls out, decent all around shocks ( front and rear).

Spend 1500 bucks, do the rancho 4" lift which has a great set of extended radius arms, drop brackets with reinforcements in them, and overall a great setup to just run trails on. Add bilstein 5100s all around and your in business. You can run 33s on that setup and it will do everything you are describing.

Re: 95 XL hunting truck
And I had the dual rancho set up on the front of mine once upon a time. It was no where near enough dampening to take a washboarded bumpy road with rain ruts in it faster than 10 to 20 miles an hour comfortably. That's why I recommend the next step up in shock absorbers from the sealed off the shelf Gabriel's. hence the suggestion of 5160's

Re: 95 XL hunting truck
I agree with tony on this one guys. Added ground clearance and a far superior ride to stock. That with some BFg all terreign's and presto instant capable hunting rig, reliable as the day is long. Just don't get suckered into the pro comp kit ( looks more capable but its not and will cost you much more)
Re: 95 XL hunting truck
No the 4" guys are definitely lift springs. The moog van springs people use are considered leveling coils. I bought some used rancho 1.5 springs and love them. You are correct that you will need to modify radius arms and camber spacers once lifting to a certain amount. 1.5" has worked with all my stock stuff so far.
Loom into bondobobs first build. It was slung real low with stock beams with longer shocks on modified buckets and modified radius arms. If I where to start over I'd go that route on 32- 33"s and have a bunch more money left to spend elsewhere.

Yep they are lift springs not leveling coils. Icbans wrote:Those coils are 4 inch lift not leveling coils right?RyanDS650X wrote:Ive got a set of 4inch Rancho springs if your interested, im in mesa. Id take 80 bucks for them. Welcome to the site!
Re: 95 XL hunting truck
Thanks for the replies. I have owned the truck for less than 2 weeks. I had given it to a buddy to do the A/C (compressor shot). I just got it back and have driven it for 2 days ..... it's thrown eng codes. I found a bad vacuum line but its still flashing the code. Seems to run ok. So, I was hot to do the exhaust and then the susp but now I am going to figure out how to chase the codes out. I also noticed that the dash mount is broke on the right side. I searched that and I guess the best way to fix it is rivet some steel strap on it to bolt down (I gotta fix that its driving me crazy).
