Project Double Trouble/Drew's Bronco

Post by drewbee88 »

Hey ya'll, So a few months ago i got a grand idea to sell my ranger and upgrade to the Bronco, mostly because being in northern ca i wanted to be able to go hit some trails and head up to the the mountains for camping trips. So I had recently posted my ranger for sale when i cam across a bronco for sale from a friend for a good price. So after selling my first born i picked it up this last weekend. its a great start for my build.

Image

So far the list of things to do after my ranger sells is as follows,

- extend radius arms and beams with 14" King Coilovers
- full 2" Cage front to rear
- j40 deavers in rear with bypass shocks

Told the fiancé that i couldn't spend any money on this guy until i sell the ranger so build will be static for a bit while i wait for the ranger to sell!

Yes this is trevors old bronco! It has deaver j40s on it already needs some love, doors have some good dents prolly gonna just find some doors from a parted out truck and replace the whole door and tailgate with one shot, stoked to get this thing rolling once my ranger sells!

Yeah wanted to get a DD that was either better for chasing/had good towing capability for races or better on MPG's, ending up after saving for a while and getting a 99 F250 powerstroke. So one of the Bronco's had to go and I still have the 94 Bronco in the side yard I'm gonna get to work on once I stop being broke...

Looking forward to seeing how this build goes Andrew!

I can get 1.75 Dom pretty cheap so if it is ridiculously expensive I'll just go that route with 2 inch main hoops

ok so i have been doing a ton of research on rear axles, really want the rear track width to match the front, so i was looking into the 9 inch swap, but really dont want to drop a third of my initial build budget on the 9 inch, so i have been toying around the idea of running a 14bolt DRW FF in the bronco. From the research i have done is the 14 bolt FF DRW axle is somewhere around 72 wms to wms, which should match nicely to the front beams when i build them. Anyone running a 14 bolt? seems like a good budget axle to widen the track width without breaking the bank. the 9 inch would be nice but every guy lately that i have talked to that made the switch said tehy expected to spend 700-1000, and end up dropping 2000 after everything,

i figured 250-300 for a junkyard axle,
400 for the solid hubs for 5x5.5 (only drawback is these make track width 2.25 inches smaller) or just modify the stock hubs and redrill)
480 for detroit locker
235 for 4.11 gears

Grand total= 965, without solid hubs.... no bad for full floating rear axle, plus parts will be easy to get and cheaper

I looked into doing the same thing. It was a while ago that I researched it but I thought the 72 WMS was a weird combo of drw housing with a van hub or something like that. Also check out ruff stuff disc caliper brackets it's real inexpensive and will shave alot of weight.

I've looked a bunch into the 14b and have a "super 14" being set up for my next project actually since I got a SMOKING deal on it.

I too was bummed when I started looking as I originally wanted 5x5.5 lug pattern and the solid hubs were all I found. I seem to remember finding more after that - maybe not. Looking...

OK - this may or may not help - but here is ALL I had saved on the corp 14 thing. Lots of links & reading.

all good, but 4th post from bottom talks about machining stock hubs for 5x5.5!

4130 corp 14 snouts from Ballistic

Ruff Stuff has 14b snouts as well (he says stronger) - $8 cheaper than ballistic.

corp 14 aluminum hubs - ballistic (8 lug!)

corp 14 5x5.5 hubs - 2.25" NARROWER than stock!

Geartech HD 5x5.5 lug hubs. Keep stock trackwidth. Hub OD for center = 4.125". Rotors used = Chevy 3/4 ton "light duty" front - need to bore the center.
Hub kit = $895 or $1250 with brakes (eldorado calipers, etc.)

Any way you play, a custom rearend normally means custom shafts, but those looking to save a few bucks could also pick-n-choose from the six different stock 14-bolt shaft lengths (they're unequal side to side, the SRW trucks and the vans use different lengths, and the DRW hip trucks use another width yet) and two different wheel hub configurations, to get the width needed on the cheap.

From rusty memory, 63, 64, 67, 70, and 76, are doable with basically stock combos, and the stock shaft lengths are staggered by about 3.5", so you can add or take off 3.5" from any of those by swapping to two long shafts, or two shorts, making 59.5, 60.5, 63.5, 66.5, 67.5, 72.5, 73.5, 79.5, all easily possible, with even more possibilities if you mix-n-match across shaft applications, not just side to side.

Measure axles from drive plate to spline end on my corp (measure both) and then the dually one Ed has. Use to figure out length for Super 14 build!

*my corp 14 axles:
Driver Side Axle = 31.75" (+/- 35.5" from outside drive flange to CL of pinion)
Pass. Side Axle = 37.5" also (+/- 35.5" from outside drive flange to CL of pinion)

Center Bore - wheels
5 spoke alcoas = +/-4.25"
8 hole alcoas = +/- 3.25"

Ed says corp 14 hub can be machined to 4.75 ---> maybe 4.175?

Lockers - look into detroit true-trac!

Dan @ Ruff Stuff idea - corp 14 axles and snouts on a Sterling housing.

Corp 14 hubs on a d70 axle
http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180681

Ed's take on the above
Ill read up on this later. Unfortunately I don't understand or comprehend why anyone would go through this trouble. Any series of these axles are cheap, I mean dirt cheap. In order for this to work, one would probably have to use the cab and chassis style hub, which places the hub extension out into harms way. With a skinny wheel, or a wheel with a fair amount of backspace (ie) H1 wheels, the hub itself sticks way the hell out there.
I also believe that there will be a huge issue with brake caliper brackets.
Im also not 100% convinced that the axle penetration into the side gear ia correct.
This is interesting information though.
Why are guys trying to keep the dana axle when the 14b is superior? I do see this is a Colorado K5 group, so it can't be because they get but hurt about a ford having a chevy rear axle.
Ill take a 14b over any rear dana on any given day. Its just a better axle, and a ton cheaper to build.
Perhaps super wide axle widths are what they are looking for? I dunno?

thanks for the link, over the last 2 days I've been doing a ton of research, for the price it makes sense to me. There is a van 14 bolt at a local pick n pull that I may go pull, from what I have understood is the wide housing and wider hubs, which should put me around 70 wms to wms, which will be pretty close to my track width up front when I extend the beams...

yup. And it may even have the 4.10's you're after in it. I'd say go pull it!

Then get prices to machine the hubs to what you want. Just make sure to see that the LARGE center of these hubs and the end of the axle will fit through the center bore on the wheel you have/want to run. Or be prepared to open those bores up.

that is the plan, i am aware i may have to open up the bore of the rim to fit, but minor problem, LOL. definitely gonna go check it out and pull it

So after doing some more research and weighing my options, i will be keeping rear axle 8 lug, and doing the 8 lug TTB swap on front with chevy parts. Main factor in reasoning, is i will be running 37 military goodyear MTRs and getting ahold of good 16.5 5x5.5 rims with the right center bore for the 14 was gonna be more difficult. I can pick up 8 lug 16.5 rims fairly cheap and just about anywhere. plus it keeps the price down on rear axle build.

16.5's are cheap for a reason. I'd avoid them, but that's just me...

I also ended up keeping my corp 14 8 lug. I'm running 16's or 17's though.

Yeah I've heard that, but for now I will be running those. If I have some problems I will be prolly jumping to 17s and sell the 16.5s...

16.5"s don't have the bead retention "bump" so airing down is supposed to be a no-no on 16.5's...and I don't know any tire manufacturer besides maybe the military tires that re releasing new tires in 16.5"
