Ok so I have been doing my homework on air filter for the bronco and air flow....with the help from My Buddy Dave
I have space issues so let me start by saying that

ump dry (use Donaldson Filter)
K&N 5 layer wet with dry foam rap
AFE 5 or 7(offroad use) layer wet with dry foam rap
Advanced Air Cleaner Systems dry foam rap (use Donaldson filters)
Donaldson air filter

any others out ?

Basic info on what I found

K&N is about Flow, Power and Mileage less about Protection
UMP has flow restriction( unless you add 2 units it says rated for 250HP per 1 unit) but has the protection for the motor
AFE 7 layer for off road use has a good combo of Flow Power Mileage and protection with only one filter
Advanced air not much out on it but it is a flow improvement of the UMP it looks like

I get this is Apples and Oranges and comes down to your need and room under the hood

Yeah I'm right there with you. I'm not a fan of my K&N set up. 30 sec. and its caked. 2 umps are not in the budget. I have tried to find a part number for a catipillar air filter assembly. Same as ump but plastic and cheaper.

Kartek or McKenzies used to carry a plastic housing tractor type filter like a UMP style deal, but cheaper. Do they not anymore?

All they (UMP) really are is a fancy tractor air filter. I'm pretty sure Donaldson has a plastic housing for their filters that will be similar. My thought is if you're into this type of housing but looking to save bucks start looking up air filter assemblies for tractors. Same type system as UMP but less $.

As for Willie's dilemma on what to do - I've always had the same issue. Like the flow of the K/N, but not the flow THROUGH. My thought was to go to a dry filter like an AFE on my next deal, but who knows when the heck that will ever be.
