Re: economig's 94: SHELBY
I will never buy any other plasma then a Hypertherm. About 9 years ago I bought a 12 year old Hypertherm Max42 (40amp). A couple months ago I upgraded to a Hypertherm Powermax 45 and sold the Max42 for 500 bucks. That old Max42 is around 21 years old now and has never skipped a beat. Literally the only maintenance I ever did was blow out the inside periodically and change the consumables. I even used the Max42 on my cnc plasma table for the first year or so of the table. Then I noticed Longevity (chinese) machines being used on tables similar to mine with good results so I looked into them. Shortly after, I had a Longevity ForceCut 60i at dealer pricing with a butt load of free consumables. I started the Longevity thing thinking it would be cool to compare against the USA brands and prove that you could make nice cuts with something much cheaper to start. I had a sponsorship deal in the works, money to be made from selling machines, free consumables, free machines TIG, MIG, Plasma for doing reviews, etc... It took me a few months to figure out that Hypertherm had FAR more to offer than all the chinese stuff out there. The chinese stuff is basically copy's of old Hypertherm expired patents. The 60i worked pretty well on the table but consistency was hit and miss. After selling off the 60i I put my Max42 back on the table with a retrofit torch to bring it to 5-10 year ago technology and that thing was night and day against the 60i. Even though the 60i was 20 years newer and had 20 more amps the Max42 cut faster and squarer with more consistency. Then I found a deal I couldn't pass up on a PowerMax45 and my eyes were opened up once again. The 45 cuts amazingly! At least 35% faster than the Max42, less dross, consistently square cut edge within 0-2 degrees.
All that being said the HF plasma will likely work out great for you. After my dealings with different plasma units/brands (I have also used ESAB and Thermal Dynamics) I have to told people that unless you plan on attaching it to a CNC table or use it more than a hobby the chinese machines will work great. When you cut by hand you most always have to cleanup with a sander anyways... What you get from Hypertherm that the chinese brands can't touch is a 40 year history of class leading innovation and excellence, better warranty, free tech support from someone who actually knows what they're talking about (even if your machine has been out of production for many years), Fine Cut consumables, faster cut speeds, cut speed charts, upgrades for older discontinued machines, shielded nozzle technology, longer consumable life, etc... They are also a employee owned company so customer service is top notch.
Sorry if I sound like a Hypertherm commercial I just felt my plasma experience would fit in well here. Lets see some plate cut to swiss cheese already.

Jealous! It's like slicing through warm butter vs hacking at a tree trunk with a butter knife.
