Ham Radios HAND HELDS!
Ok guys, so I am on a mission to pick up a hand held race radio now... looking at a few options, but wanted to see what you are all using?

Thanks for all the feedback guys.... just found a pretty good deal on a slightly used (virtually new) yaesu vx-170. picking it up tonight!

they make a nice antenna for that radio its a diamond srh77ca
it works really well.
good luck with it.you'll like it alot!!haha it'll take a little time figuring out the operation of everything.

the scan feature is awsome,i actually sat in the drive thru at mc donalds and it stopped on their out going drive thru freq. it was funny,i could speak thru their speaker and they couldnt hear me but the car in front of me could.........

Yes I have a couple of HAM hand helds. They are modified like my big watt Kenwood to have the same bands and freqs. Its a Yaesu VX-5R Nice little unit with a Lion battery and 5 watts. One thing I recommend is get the cheater antena. And discaerd the rubber ducky it came with. Then you will have an antenna that approaches a quarter wave we are familiar with. It greatly improves Tx/Rx. Like the big Kenwood it is very easy to program. Both can be programmed with the keypad or the computer and the appropriate cable. Not at all like the Icom which is a big pain and computer/cable only.
