I have two Icom V8000s. Works well for me. Available from Ham Radio Outlet for about $250. Rugged radios sells a package too.

Kenwood 271 is what I run and I really like it. I think it's the most bang for the buck in a 45w radio.

I run one of these and like it. Cheap and works well - never let me down. The Kenwood is in the same department. For general chase and play the Kenwood or the Icom 2100 or 2200 are perfect.

I have this radio (Icom 2100H) and it's worked well for me. Once it's set up, it's very easy to use, has plenty of power and is compact. One thing to note, the icom DTMF mic that comes with the 2100H is notorious for bad transmit switches... and Icom charges more to repair it than to purchase a new mic. There are plenty avail on ebay for a reasonable price.

There are lots of antennas out there... I'm using an Antenex 5/8 wave SS whip, hard mounted to the roof of the truck. I also have a mag mount for temp installs.

Does it matter what antenna I use? I've got one for a regular cb. Dumb question...

It would work but not well. You should use an antenna meant for the freq you use. After it's installed you can have the length trimmed to "tune" it. A signal meter is needed for this.

If your going to be using the radio with multiple teams, the Icom V8000 is the winner. Unless you like caring around a laptop and programming software for the Kenwoods. Kenwood business band radios are great race/dedicated chase radios, but they are a pain for random usage.

The installation will make or break a radios performance. Take your time there.
