Hey all, my name is Tim and I have a 1966 Bronco. I'm different from most people that you encounter and always have been, but I'm ok with that: I started with a 3.3L Inline 6 and replaced it with a 4.1L Inline 6; next is going to be a Dana 30 SA out and Dana 50 TTB in; finally, equal length swingset steering and watt link rear. I think TTBs are underrated because they're not the status quo and even more so frowned upon in an Early Bronco because they couldn't be further from the norm. I'm on fordsixforum.com (all I6'ers) and classicbroncos.com (all EB's) and I joined this forum because I wanted information from the experts here: all of you. The intent of my build is two-fold, first and foremost: not to be the baddest rock crawler (my primary area of interest) nor the fastest desert racer, but to be able to go anywhere and have fun doing it; secondly and just as important: to have a one-off vehicle that challenges conventional practice and thought. I look forward to sharing here with you at Go Fast Broncos...

Welcome!! I think you'll find your not as different on this site. Many on this site want that exact same thing... Some that challenges conventional thinking. We do have some standard routes but many, Smart Alex, CHO, motorsport, to name a few are far from the standard path. Good luck and I look forward to your progress. Please start a build thread on this site in the EB section.

Sounds like a cool build! I've always thought an early Bronco body on an Explorer chassis would be cool, too.

I'd suggest looking at the dana 44 beams, they are longer and can pivot with better geometry and will live with 37's on the bronco.

I don't mean to sound soft, but that's a BEAUTIFUL ride. The reason I'm going with the Dana 50 is that I'm getting one for free. Do you happen to know what the differences in geometry are between the two?

44's are heavy, 50's are worse. They use the same sized axles so that larger ring gear isn't helping much. The 50's are also shorter on the D-side, they are closer to equal length than 44's. Even for free, I'm not sure I would use them.

Ok, so the 44's are better because they are more unequal in length? Wouldn't beams that were closer to equal length be a better geometry setup? Also, if the axle is the weakest link, can they not be upgraded as well? As far as changing their lengths, I can do that as I will start working for an off road fabrication company in a week and a half.

They are longer, long is better on beams. They are also lighter, lighter is better. D50 axles are oddballs, not nearly the aftermarket support that 44's have. Also you would need to swap over one end to get the same lug pattern all around. D50=8 lug.

On something light like an EB, D44 is plenty strong enough.

Ah, I see. I probably should've provided a little more info: I also have a matching Dana 60 rear that I've been given, so I'm going to have to change over to 8 lug anyway. As far as extending beams go, I planned on plating and possibly extending them. Before I had decided to make a ttb swap in, I had planned on 1 ton axles, before doing a twin turbo mod.

The way to go if you are going to extend the Dana 50, do a 44/50 hybrid. Run the 50 knuckles, beam ends, hubs, axles and run 44 beams and geometry. There are a couple projects on here about hybrids. Stronger setup with better suspension geometry. You could pickup 44 beams pretty cheap.

Does anyone have any numbers on geometry, one vs the other? I'd be curious to see what the differences were... I'm a bit of a math wiz, so a comparison and contrast of the two would be pretty cool. It probably wouldn't hurt to do a write up on that too...

Go to Ecology and pull the beam and radius arms in tact. Take up to the counter and call it a lower A-arm LOL............

Also, there was a 44HD model that was 8 lug, anyone know if the hubs will swap on the snouts?

Inner bearings on the 8 lug hubs are larger than std D44 hubs.
