OUTLAW 3, a new race series for SWB 4x4's

Post by baja-chris »

I've talked to Alfonso (Poncho) LaCarra who runs CODE. He does not presently have class 3 but is willing to create this Outlaw 3 class for us if we show up with at least 3 trucks at the first race in early February. This is a chance to get this off the ground and build some momentum. I will commit to running this full series if others do. And I will chase some contingency sponsors for the class as well.

CODE Class: Outlaw 3

This is an Open Production based class. Vehicles in this class must be based on a production vehicle. All items are open except as restricted below.

1) Must conform to promoters safety rules

2) Wheelbase not to exceed 108” at any point in the suspension travel

3) Must have working 4wd at the start of the race

4) Vehicles must resemble the look of a production vehicle and have fenders on all four corners.

a. May modify or remove portions of the frame and body as desired, however must leave enough of production vehicle to convince others you are following the spirit of a production based class. For example a rock buggy with fiberglass body is not in the spirit of this class as it is not based on a production vehicle.

This is a Pro class with payback. CODE entry fees are approximately $500 per race including insurance. Payback is 60%. The series is 5 races (the 6th race is powder puff and not part of championship). Competitors must enter 3 races to qualify for the championship.

CODE requires at least 3 entries in Outlaw 3 at the first race in order for this class to exist.

The races are typically on Saturday with tech open late Friday night in Mexicali. Most races are just outside Mexicali and are easy to chase and relatively short to keep costs down. This is open desert racing with lots of passing lines and easy chase access. This is old school Baja racing. Mexicali is a safe and racer friendly town and easy to get to with two border crossings. The Mexicali border crossing times have been greatly reduced since more lanes opened at the main port in TJ.

The 2015 schedule is not yet published but it is expected to be similar to 2014 schedule.

1) Early February – Gran Prix style race just outside Mexicali, 19 mile laps

2) Mid May - (will not conflict with NORRA since CODE runs NORRA checkpoints), night race outside Mexicali

3) Early August – Jacume GP, a Laughlin style event, 20 mile laps (race is half way between Tecate and Mexicali up at 3500ft elevation)

4) October – Mexicali to Cohabuso, two 108 mile laps

5) December – Mexicali to San Felipe 208 mile race

I will commit to running all 5 races if we get this off the ground. Dave Moore said he will commit to running 3 or 4 races but cannot make the first race due to business trade show conflicts. Chris Raffo said he will commit to running some of the races but the first race is unlikely. So we need two other entries to come to the February race in order to make this class a reality and have a championship for it.

Who else will give this a shot? Billy Bunch, your Chevy V8 powered Jeep is legal here.

Need some support or it won't happen.

If you have a bronco with full safety gear, $500 gets you on the track!
CODE does not require expensive stuff like cage inspections or trackers.

Basic safety items will get you on the track, full cage, 5-pt harness, race seat, nets, fuel cell plus inexpensive stuff like amber light, horn, first aid kit, etc.
I'm pretty sure they do not require the 2" cages SCORE does, have seen many there with 1.75" cages and even 1.5" cages. But you can check with CODE direct to verify.

How cool would it be to see 5-10 SWB 4x4's racing again?
Come on out!

And for those of us pansies who don't race (like me), we should all come together to go out and Chase. How cool would it be to see 4-5 Broncos racing with 10-15 support vehicles out there!

Also, I agree with Chris, CODE puts on some cool racing with easy access!

Hit up Billy Bunch. He just recently had a v8 put in my old class 3 jeep and I know he likes racing Mexico.

I can see it now. Carmen has Brian on the floor face down in an armlock, telling him: "Voy a la raza de su Bronco en la nueva clase CODE, ok?"

Chris

I just came from the CODE race..... I chase/pit for class 1 and my buddy who runs a 4 runner I'm sure he would be interested in the class. He did all the code race this year and plans on doing the same next year.

I think I saw his 4 runner, if it's 108" wheelbase or less it's in.
