HOON Racing: SCORE Class 3

Post by HOONracing »

Hey there everyone! We have been quietly reading through everyone's posts here on this site for a while now and there is some great knowledge and inspiring ideas being passed around on this forum. We started our truck's build last summer and in preparation we often came to the Gofast forum. So, first off, thank you very much for providing a great community and a useful source of information specific for a truck we dearly love.

The plan for this thread is to post up some of the more detailed bits of our truck's construction and race repairs, as well as some of our support vehicles and maybe odd bits about our racing overall (but we'll see what turns out to be interesting). Our website (down below) and our Facebook page (linked within the website) will also be providing some basic info about our racing endeavors. Please 'like' us and follow along. The Bronco is a special beast and Class 3 is a thinning genre--but we hope to help fix that :)

As of right now, it is looking like at the end of May there will be some extra time for us to sit down and spell out the what, when, and how of our stock 1991 Bronco's transformation to race machine. So, this is merely a preview for now. Check out the race schedule on our website and stay tuned for more info and and photos.

VORRA short course: Prairie City OHV, Rancho Cordova, CA. April 21st

Not a bad first race out there at PC. I was out there and it was a pretty good show. Did not see when you got off into the weeds though, looks like a pretty wild ride!

Just ordered some new 3.0 4 bypass shocks for the rear from FOX. Thank you FOX for sponsoring Hoon Racing. Will have the new shocks on before the HDRA Eldorado 500, then after the race the front will be getting new 3.0 bypasses as well.

I (Rob Graves ) had told you on facebook that a friend (scott Wooden) will be racing it in his class 3. just a couple weeks away. What spring rate you running up front. It sure stuffed hard on one of those pics. were the seals blown then. Im running 450 over 500 on my front.

Yikes- no the white toyota bumped us going into the corner and we got sideways the only way to not go over was to go off the track and then when we got back onto the track we went on 2 wheels very close to going over and very close to 23 but didnt hit them. It sure was a fun ride. The bronco did very well on 2 wheels, haha.
Rob- Hey we were planning on doing the yerington race but since we have to get new rear shocks we had to cancel it. To much to get done before the race. The new shocks come in the end of the month from fox and also got bumps for the rear. The front springs are i think 400 over 600, I think, i will check when I get back to the shop. The front did hit hard a few times but we think the spring rate works very well. We have 2.5 bumps up front so it actually works very well. The 2.5 fox coilovers up front worked well and have no issues at this point. We still need some bypasses up front to make the suspension work perfect. We plan on getting new fox 3.0 bypasses after the hdra 500. Just dont have the time to get them installed before the 500.

Ya Scott has king 2.5 coilovers up front with I believe 450 over 500 springs. and also king bypasses I believe 3" size and king bumps. Out back he has race pack deaver 2.5 wide springs and 3.0 x 18 bypass kings and king bumps.Sorry to hear you wont be making yerrington.Almost looks like it could use a front sway bar for that short course stuff with the faster cornering speeds and trying to keep it flatter thru the corner.Looks awesome though, and fun.Look forward to your build pics.

Received the new Fox 3.0 Quad Bypass Shocks and 2.0 bumps for the rear, custom built just for the bronco, thank you Fox for the sponsorship! Now time to get the race truck ready for the HDRA Elderado 500 in exactly one month. Anyone from GFB going to be out there?

Excellent run for first time out, heck for any race! Truck looks and sounds bad ass. Brutal course and you guys kept coming around! No doubt you caught me cheering you on as bronco racers are bad for my blood pressure. Need a 12 step program I think...haha! Thought you were done late, but then out of the darkness you came thru mixing it up with the designated sweep car. Finish or not, you guys kicked ass!
First race and a pair of Bronco racing legends in your pit must have been some good motivation, not that you needed it....haha! Friends from Bishop with the 1440 truck, said it was great pitting next to you guys. Hope to meet you guys soon at a race. Greg

Hoon Racing 2013 HDRA El Dorado 500 Race Report.
First off I want to say thank you to everyone that came to help us out at our first desert race. We had a great time.
Lap 1-The start went well and we came into Main Pit with no issues other than some loose rear fiberglass which the team removed (we will have to improve the bedside mounts). In Loop 2 we hit a rock at speed that broke the driveline. After pulling out our spare we were back on course in about ten minutes. Loop 3 we had a rear tire go out in the rocky section. When we made it to Pit B the pit crew found that we had lost a nut on one of the shackle hangers. The shackle was at an angle which was causing it to hit the frame. It took a little over an hour to change the hardware and a few other things. The welder came out and all the other suspension hardware was checked and then we were back on track.
Lap 2- We lost the rear brakes at the start of the lap in Loop 1. We took it slow down the mountain using 4-low to keep us going down at a safe speed. At Main Pit we plugged the line with the hole going to the driver side. The entire brake system was bled and because the rear end is a spool, the loss of one rear brake was not a big issue other than a worry for overheating. Getting back into the truck we changed drivers. Andrew swapped with codriver Sean who was going to drive the second lap. In Loop 2 there were no issues and everything was working great. In Loop 3 we got a flat at the same spot on the course as the last lap (passenger side rear--same as the blow out in the first lap). We change it out and got going again. Then in under one minute we got another flat--same tire. Luckily, we had two spares on board. We made it to Pit B where we got two new spares on board. The pit was quick and we finished the lap strong.
Lap 3- Loop 1 went well and we made it to Main Pit with no issues as the sun was setting. We did a driver change--Andrew got back in the driver seat and Sean to the codriver seat for the remainder of the race. The team noticed the steering was loose so we change it out with a spare. The lightbar was installed and the truck took off. Loop 2 went great no issues making good time. Loop 3 went very well no issues at all, no flats in the rocky section this time. The truck made it passed the start/finish line with one hour to spare before the final lap cutoff time of 1:00am.
Lap 4 final- Loop 1 was going well until we notice an issue with either a broken motor mount or transmission mount. When we made it to Main Pit the team noticed a broken driver side engine mount. We welded it up solid hoping it would hold up for the next 63 miles remaining in the race. We left Main Pit knowing we could finish the race within the time hack of eighteen hours. Loop 2 was going great, going fast and making up some time through the smoother portions of the course. There was a nasty uphill section that had become deep silt and was rutted out by all the race traffic. We took the same line as the last lap but we didn’t make it and got stuck. Both front and rear axles were buried. The truck was in 4-low for this section of the course but it still was not enough. There was brush under the truck which caught on fire because of the header. We were able to put the fire out using sand (Which we learned in Baja). We got out and started digging and using the high lift to jack the truck up and stuff rocks under the tires on all 4 corners. BC 6 stopped and helps us get the truck free and there was an UTV stuck right in front of us as well. We finally got it free but had lost about two hours in the race. We got in the race truck and started driving. We had no more issues and made it to Pit A where Weather Man said we had sixteen minutes to complete the remaining thirty miles of the final lap. We decided to call the race.
About a year ago, in May of 2012, we started the transformation of our 1991 Bronco into a race truck. We stripped it down to bare bones and set out to create a machine that we felt would be competitive in Class 3. Beforehand, countless hours were spent researching online and on the course. We had been supporting a fellow local team tackle the Baja 1000 since 2007 and had gone to an assortment of other off road races. We built multiple desert style suspension systems on a few different trucks teaching us a good understanding of what is needed. The Bronco was constructed in a year’s time because of many late nights and the sacrifice of most all of our leisure time. After it was on its wheels in early 2013 we took it out on a number of test runs and many issues were worked out. Before the truck ever saw a race course it was well tested. In April we competed in a short course race to really see what was working and what would fail under the extreme scrutiny of the Prairie City course. Our shocks were trashed and we sought out and acquired a sponsorship from Fox Racing.
The Reno 500 was a total success in breaking our team into desert racing. With some experience under our belts we plan to continue moving forward and racing the entire HDRA series in 2014.

Greg thanks for the encouragement you gave us at 3am over the radio. Also every time we went by your check point we would see you start jumping and fist bumping, it made use feel real good. It was awesome to have a bronco fan out there also it was awesome having the Moss team in our pit for our first desert race. We are very excited about the future of our race team. Not sure what races we will be doing this fall but we plan to race the bronco the entire HDRA season for 2014, hopefully we could get a few more broncos out there to race against. The only major repairs the truck needs are new motor mounts and new rear shackle hangers, other then that the truck is ready to race again.
