Dent Side Racing TORC team. *Hillbilly fun & some work*

Post by Joxracing »

Well. We're starting a race team

A couple buddy's and I are in the beginning stages of putting together our attack on the TORC series for the (hopefully) 2012 season.

So far we have a Enduro Truck, a Formula 4x4 Bronco, and a Ford Ryder Moving van as our to-be haul rig.

The 1978 Ford Bronco Formula 4x4 start.

We're just gathering parts, and vehicles. We have no team name yet, but we settled on the ol' rough riders paint theme, since we rock all fords.

I'll have more photos, and specs later.
Any input you racers have is greatly appreciated, since we're all pretty much green on racing.

Nah, thats my last name, and with other guys on the crew, it wouldnt be fair.

*Cage on the 72 Enduro*

Cutting the roof off, to cut the old shotty cage out and put a new one in, sound like the easiest route?

Who did you buy the bronco from? Not alot of formula 4x4 broncos in that year, and I am thinking it may be the one I used to race, just a new color and a few changes?

We purchased it from Dave Miya(?)

It use to be blue with big floppy homemade fiberglass doors about 2 seasons ago.

Yep, thats the same bronco! We sold it to Dave. (Or the guy Dave bought it from, can't remember anymore) I can't take credit for the doors though! They were stock and opened and closed when I raced it.

No Way! thats neat. Were you the original builder?

It looks like she was raced hard since that picture... haha.

You have any suggestions for the cage we're about to build on that enduro ^^^

My business partner had built it before we met so no, I just raced it.

As far as the enduro cage, I would build a main hoop. Put a dash bar in it, keep the a pillar bars sinple with one bend between the two. Throw in a windshild top tube, and one tube down the middle of the roof between the hoop and the windshild tube. On the roof diagnal, I like to have it over the drivers head, running to the intersection of the windshieldbar and the middle roof tube. Nothing on the passenger side. Try to get some protectiong behind the drivers head as well, things get wild out there! Put some roll cage padding on the door bar, and wrap it with tape but don't secure it to the tube. This lets you "roll" into the cage! ha!

Looking forward to watch the Bronco built. Finally another 78-79 Bronco project.

For the cage look at my thread, I’m pretty satisfied with my design.

Also, what kind of bracing are you planning for the front axle? If you already have one made please post the design.

Back when I raced it we had to swap a new front axle on it one weekend to make sundays race. We trussed it with a giant crow bar we cut and bent into place and welded on.

I am sure it has had something better fabbed since then! I am interested to see it get brought back to life!

Hi Jox here is the link :

I did do a couple of mods since. Some parts of the suspension and the headers have been redone. Plus the quarters are now fiberglass like the front end.

Starting to make some progress on the tear down of the 72 Stock truck.

Up on the lift & prepping front suspension for new additions&fresh coils.

Image

Gutting fenders& wells, as well as the dash. It is a flurry of people around this thing for 2 hours.

Image

Our pile of parts is getting bigger.

Image

We're also swaping in a 9" with 4.11's? I think.

Worth trussing the axle before its swapped in?

I would. Especially if it is out. Otherwise you know you will kick yourself later. Things always fail at the most inoppertune times.

Sounds like thats what we're gonna be doing.

More progress today.
We got both fenderwells removed, and fenders gutted. The fuel cell is out and ready to be cleaned up, the dash is gutted and we put the new coils in and set it down to see what the camber issue is.

This is where I have questions. When you 2wd guys bend your beams, do you just heat them up and set em down?
How do you guys go about correcting this?

Not bored at all. Acutally working drawing sections and elevations of the entry to a HIGH $$ house in Emerald Bay. That and answer texts from some knucklehead... Oh - that's you - haha.

I have a LOT of info like the above saved in a word doc. form for any/all of my builds. Whenever I come across a good thread on something I may be interested in, I could learn from, or I might need to reference for one of my builds I save it. I have multiple pages of links for all my projects. Everything from wiring to paint/body to suspension geometry stuff I have threads available at a seconds notice ;)

That is a LOT of info there, CT754.

Ive read through most of it... and im trying to make sense of it all.

so, basicly to correct that goofy negative camber, I should heat those beams up and bend them straight, almost like a TTB cut n turn job?

Correct me if im wrong, im still not 100% clear or confident on the procedure.

Also, best way to truss a 9" guys?
