Red Baja

Post by donncdrc »

I decided to sell my boat for lack of use but no one was coming up with the money. The owner of this car made me an offer to trade with cash and my son really wanted it so here it is. It is Subaru powered with turbo and built bus trans. I had another car with this set up years ago and it moved along pretty good. When I got it the radiator was in the back on top of the engine set on a 45 degree angle made the car look awkward. I moved the radiator to the front and it looks much better just hope it works better. Also added skid plates in front and the under motor. Next week I am taking it to outfront for a tune. Immediate plans are to add a new 10" wider beam, some old BTR beadlocks I have in my shed, Mirrors with cages, some aluminum work and change the lights.
I have always loved Baja's and have owned a few over the years. This is a nice car and look forward to getting it dialed in.

The best thing about VW's is there is so many cool bolt-ons that are cheap. I picked these up from Kartek. They have them for Rangers also. Think I might have something similar made for the Bronco.

Cool / clean bug! I've got a soft spot for baja bugs for some reason.

As for the mirrors - those are cool. There's a thread about them & making them for the bronco on here somewhere. I've got a set 1/2 made for a 70's truck that I'll finish some day.

Oh and Robert - mine are 1/2" tube but I bent um up (by hand = I took the hydro off & just pushed the bender arm with my hand) on one of my 3/4" dies. If you're doing 3/4" ones I've got 2-3 different radius' for the JD2 in 3/4" if you need another size when you get to these.

I appreciate it Steve, I sold philo my old 3/4 die and bought a replacement, this one hooks up to the pins for hydraulic use so I imagine its the larger radius. I will keep that in mind.

This is my businesses busy time of the year so I haven't even tested my Bronco since getting it redone. I have done a few things to the bug. It's just about dialed in. I have added lots of new parts, tires and wheels, spare, air filter, signals, led's, some cage work, etc, etc. Steve Johnson has it now getting the engine dialed in. I have to admit I love VW's and have not been this excited about a vehicle in a long time. I like VW's so much that I am planing out and collecting parts for a "Trophy Bug". Looking for a nice rust free body (no pan needed) if anyone knows of one.

How does it feel to sit in and drive with that kick up in the floor under the pedals?
