4.0 & A4LD in that thing? What gearing?

SOOO tempted on one of these things as I've always loved them & they are dirt cheap now, but I remember the typical tranny woes that were common & my dad replacing the A4LD 4 times in his STOCK '94.

Thanks guys.

Yeah it's a 4.0 and A4LD. I blew up the original A4LD doing a burnout, this new one has less than 5k miles. Gears are 4.88's. It doesn't actually do too bad.

Soooo a slight upgrade coming? Ha! Should be cool. The rear of these trucks can be tricky but, damn are they fun.

This thing feels like an Explorer again with these 35's. The 37's were just too big. It felt like it was up on stilts, and the steering was struggling. It handles way better now.

man those pictures bring me back to the days when I fell in love with these things. All I wanted through high school & early college was an exploder to build. They were too much $$ for my broke ass back then. How times have changed - lol. Got the $$ for a $500 score on one of these things now but no time to wrench & no place to store one. Plus I can't afford a divorce. haha

Bout the same for me. I was in high school in the late 90's. This truck would have been worth 25 grand back then! I am keeping the original front end on it & 90's inspired!

Yup, I was in HS from 94-'98. These things were actually worth something back then & John Swift's exploder was what I always dreamed of. I used to love the square front ends, but over the years my love for that has faded for sure. Until this thing that is! I was all about the 95-98 conversion on these until seeing yours. This thing definitely brings back my love for the square front. It just takes the wide stance/filled out wheel wells to do so.

It's funny man, because I was the same way. My first Explorer HAD to be a second gen. It was cool and all, but I really didnt want to mess with an A arm front. My buddy talked me into a first gen and I am so glad he did. In stock form, these trucks are flat out lame! I think that is why there are so few of them out there. I am going to keep the OG front end forever!

damn dude, I just really love this build. migrated over here to finish browsing the thread since I couldn't take the close-minded tools over on pirate that cant fathom anything aside from 44s and exocages.

I was considering doing this as these things can be had dirt cheap, but ended up going with basically the same idea in the bronco, as I do a lot of remote camping/shooting I need to be able to carry a lot of gear and at 6'5 I can't quite sleep comfortably in the back in a smaller rig like an expo. but shit this thing is rad.
