White 1994 F-150 Sleeper Build

You would have to mount off the u-bolt plates and then you would have to have the shock go through the bed and make a bed cage. The raptor axles are a lot wider than ours so they have the space to mount outboard of the frame.

Raptor wms-wms is around 76"

8.8 is 65.5"

Yeah, it could fit, but would end up being much more complex, and much more costly to go that route. The added benefit wouldn't justify the added cost.

I'm not arguing with Cho and Johnny as I know they know there stuff but..... Why couldn't they extend the tube that the shocks are currently mounted to 4-6" out past the frame rails and run the shock in the same manner as they are but on the outside of the frame rail? Image

Looks like you could potentially tie it into the front spring hanger too. Beeeeefcake!

Probably not. To close to the axle and it need to have a pretty good offset to get the shock away from the springs.

The upsides.

1, gets your bottom]om mounts farther out and helps keep the, out off the dirt when your in the ruts.
2, helps control body sway
3, can get the top mount up into the wheel well making the shock more vertical and REALLY improving your geometry at full bump. Otherwise you will really need those BP's to combat the horrible angles at full bump. Also lets you fit a longer shock if you do a little sheetmetal work.
4, going with longer shocks won't reduce bed space.

The con's.

1, costs more up front, but cheaper than redoing it down the road when you discover that you poor geometry is cooking your 3" BP's.

Also, FWIW....

I would move the front spring mount up. it only needs to be about 2" below the frame. That and a shackle flip to make up the height difference. Will handle the bumps way better and give you way less DS plunge.

Wow, I guess I should rename this build thread The White 1994 Monday Morning QB Build.

If we did what Brian is suggesting and ran that bar outside the frame rails, you wouldn't improve the shock geometry at full bump, it'd just be outside the frame rails. If you wanted to get the shock further up into the wheel well (where there's actually a lot less room than you'd think) to improve the geometry, that'd require a much more complicated mount, and a significant amount more time/cost. The other issue is that with the spring right there, you'd likely have clearance issues with the bottom of the shock body and the spring, so having the lower mounts as low as they are currently, might not even be possible.

Instead of opening that can of worms, Jonny/Cho are just tabbing the axle outside the springs (you can see the inside lower shock tab in the pic Brian posted), so that later on when I finally cave in and go through the bed, we can mount shocks outside the framerails without having to re-powdercoat the axle. Just build a bedcage, and bolt on the shocks.

Just gonna run either poly or factory bumps. No air bumps.

Loving the direction this has taken!

Coming from someone who tried the shocks outboard the frame & ended up making a shock mount similar to where this one is going I'd say good call in not wasting your time outboard yet. If you will go through the bed & do a bit hoop then outboard is easy & great. Trying to keep the shocks under the bed & mount outboard gets tricky for sure. Go on top of the leaf pack plate & the shock gets SUPER short. Try & go down to the axle to mount the lower end of the shock & you run into fighting for space with the springs through the travel.

You pretty much just listed out the exact reasoning we went through on this one. Honestly, for as hard as I use this truck, I really think I'll be perfectly happy with my under the bed setup now. If I really wanna upgrade, I can always slap on a set of the 3.0" aftermarket Fox bypasses that they do for the rear of the Raptor and get a little more droop travel and adjustability.
