SuperSixAxis 3rd attempt at a low buck project!

Picked up a 1990 Ranger. 4cyl, 5Speed. No A/C, heater, radio.

The purpose of this truck is to build a LOW BUCK, bombproof desert truck I can learn to do fab work with. Now that I moved to a proper house in Hawaii and have a 2 car garage I am amassing a tool collection and getting back after it.

I am leaning toward

31x10.50
5.5 camburg kit
Deavers
Fox 2.0's
Simple cab/bedcage
Primer
Under $5K total cost(paid $600 for the truck)

If it was me, I would go 30-9.5R15's for the 4 squirrel, as they arent as heavy as the 31-10.5's. Just my $0.02 Learned that from the Hilux days.

Yeah, forgot to list the axle. It will be a 31 spline ranger 8.8"(stock width) with 4.56 and a limited slip unit of some type(thinking factory Trac-Loc)

Yeah, I agree with Rod... same same with the Hilux... the 30's worked really well.

31 is the smallest I would use.

I used to have a 93 standard cab, 2.3L, manual, no a/c....

I put a bent beam Autofab kit on it with 2.5" shocks all around and long travel leaves. That truck was a BLAST! Super, super simple and tons tons of fun.

Be careful with the burg coils. They tend to be way too tall and way too stiff for this application. John has a standard cab 4 cylinder specific coil. I used it on my old Ranger and loved it.

If your setting up the rear end and re-gearing why not go with 31s?
AutoFab really has the Ranger stuff down. Nice clean functional kits... My .02...

Back when i had my 83 I was running a 2.3 5 speed out of a 97 with 33x10.50x15's with 4.56 gears in the stock 7.5 locked with welded spiders. Not sure how much weight I really saved going with the skinny tires but it worked really well and wasn't too much of a dog. Sure I didn't win any drag races but I had alot of fun with that truck.

One electrical fire later.....This one was done! Moving to something in line with a chase vehicle. Looking in Hawaii so I will get very little truck for my $$'s gonna see what 4-5K will get me here. Hopefully an A-Arm F150 or Z71. Chasing is cheap and more of what I am wanting to do!

Some XJ's had a Dana 35 High Pinion front axle.. that might make for a good replacement.

D35 is a rear axle. The XJ's only had D35 HP (then went LP in 99+).

What exactly did you break? The 30's aren't real strong without a truss and aftermarket axles and braced "C"'s

You mean the fronts were only Dana 30s, right! I thought they might of had a 35 front but you're right they're only D30s in front, and as it turns out the one I was thinking about was a High Pinion Dana 30.

Yes but a bigger dana, every once in a while I scheme on building a jeep with f150 left overs, and a 300 efi motor.
