so are you changing out/upgrading the pump or is this an "economy" vehicle?

I know a guy who loves these things & has switched a few to veggie oil. Never asked him too much about them though.

Going to mildly upgrade it. May figure out how to put a cummins P-pump on it with a gutted 6th cylinder if I can't do anything with it. I drove it around today... But it doesn't like to start cold so I need to adjust the valves and tune it up before I pull the engine.

Donor car! The engine needs a valve adjustment, new injector nozzles, and fresh glow plugs. Too bad its not grid heater based...

The door is 1" wider then the truck... And my car trailer, the Bronco, and 40,000 lbs of steel is blocking the only other access to behind the rear building.

Going to start cleaning the frame and removing small stuff tomorrow. Are the factory coil buckets or engine stands worth anything or should I just toss them into the scrap pile?

In my best Napoleon Dynomite voice: "leafs AND coilovers huh... lucky!!!"

you might be able to get $20-30 for the buckets and then for the stands if you were patient and tried. Most likely not worth the time though.

MIGHT be worth hanging onto the engine towers if they are for a 302, but even then probably not.

Getting the frame cleaned up for paint and mock up. Also adjusted the valves in the benz, replaced the injector heat shields, and replaced the valve cover gaskets. Starts better but not like my cummins does. Going to do new injector nozzles, fresh filters, and troubleshoot the glow plug system. I also ordered a machined adapter for the transmission flange. I still need to get a oil filter relocation kit for the engine too.

Looks like 4 of the 5 glow plugs are bad. Ordered new Bosch plugs today...

Can't decide what fenders I want to order from Autofab... Leaning towards the raised style. I also am undecided on the sloped hood...

The factory MB trans for now and possibly swap for a M5R2 later. The Merc trans is a four speed auto with a 1:1,2:1,3:1,4:1 ratio. No lockup. I hear it is very stout but also very power robbing.

Getting the rear frame section sorted out. I am moving the front leaf spring cross member forward, the rear hanger cross member rearward, and the small support cross member forward and flipping it over. Hangers are all getting trashed for 90s Ford Ranger hangers and a set of Chevy 64" springs. Building a fuel tank for behind the axle, most likely out of Aluminum. Should be about 41 gallons all said and done. I also need to slice the factory shock mounts off the axle and put longer ones on and try to fit a 8" or 10" shock under the bed.

Man, I thought you were kidding about the MBZ swap. My boss had an 82 300D non-turbo, manual car that was a complete turd. It ran perfectly and drove, rode and handled great but, damn! It was impressively gutless. I guess the turbo makes a big difference?

I don't know about the turbo helping that much, my mom had a turbo desiel Benz wagon, still slow. There was one positive though the smoke screen to blind the car following you if they rode your bumper. You could literally oil their window with soot n it would only smear if they tried their windshield washer.

If the car was smoking it definitely was not running right.

These are not huge power motors, but this one will run good once I'm done with it. Plans are to add an intercooler, egr removal, 3" downpipe, and pump modifications.

In the end if I don't like it I will swap to a 4BT or Isuzu.

That little sketchup looks familiar.
With my tank I was able to get 45 or so gal. My frame is narrower though so you can get about the same while keeping the tank shorter (meaning not hanging down as far).

As for the shocks - I ended up with 8" after trying 10". I've got Deaver springs for a Chevy 2500 --> 4" lift = f87's I think.

Anyway the 10" shock was perfect for droop with the 64's, but the body was too long for bump & the shock would bottom before the axle hit the bumpstop. I went with 8" stroke and have to limit the droop a bit. My shock mount sits on top of the frame and is just barely under the skin of the bed - so it's about as high as you can go without cutting into the bed.

Planning on these to fit 10" if possible.
