I'm thinking a custom 8.8 hybrid from Currie might not be a pretty good compromise if I can make it strong enough. I'd get the desired width, could do a similar truss to what I have now and would be able to use my current third member and brakes. I think all said and done I could keep it under $2,000, vs most likely around $3500-4000 for a 9".
The difference in cost between the two would probably allow me to cage it at the same time if I went with the Hybrid.
Opinions???
Get your 8.8 retuned, if it's already an 8.8 hybrid, you could take it to currie and have them retune and go wider. You would need new axles but us keep everything else as is......

Any news on this thing?
Re: 1990 Ford150 4x4 "Bajamobile"
Dropped the truck off with Mark today. Really excited. She's gonna be getting a major makeover. 3" wider beams, 9" rear end, cage, full glass, and possibly a "short course" style link set up : ) Anyone interested in buying my current rear set up?

Link Killer 64" spring under kit with the custom 16" Link Killer bypass. It's also got a trussed 8.8 with 9" ends with 4:88's in it.

I'm very interested to here how you like short course link vs 64s. What shock package will you run with the 4 link?SC150 wrote:Dropped the truck off with Mark today. Really excited. Updates please. I have much love for this truck because I had the exact truck I was planning to build until life got in the way. A wife and kid later and a single cab is out of the question. Now I'm stuck with a bronco

Re: 1990 Ford150 4x4 "Bajamobile"
So, plans changed big time on the truck. I realized that in real-life I'm actually broke, so I had to scrap the massive makeover. BUT, on a positive note, I think my rear end woes are hopefully over.
I went down for three weeks for the 1000 and ended up going all the way to Cabo and back. My bearings decided to go out on the way home just south of El Rosario in the middle of the night. Super super sketchy. I spent the whole next day with a very inebriated Mexican mechanic trying to figure out how to get home. The bearings had milled out where they're supposed to get pressed on, and we couldn't find a cartridge that was the right size. So, after very very long day the mechanic decided to creatively engineer a solution... he welded the bearing straight to the axle. This, obviously was a patch to get back to the states and also rendered my axle worthless for further use.
As it turns out, the axles that have been in my truck (I bought the whole read end used) are actually intended for drag racing. The bearing that I've been using were also intended for the same. Problem is, drag racers go straight. The bearings I was using didn't have enough side load tolerance, which is apparently why I kept going through em.
So, as it stands, I've got my truck coming home soon with some new parts. I kept the housing. It's still straight as an arrow and it's tough. I went with Moser 35 spline axles though. Got a spool and a new seat of gears in there too. I also ordered up a spare set of bearings to keep with me at all times. Now that I have spares I'm sure I'll probably never have another problem with them again : /

On a separate note, I'm still very seriously considering cutting out the back of my cab and doing a "walk thru". I've been researching it more and more and I think I've figured out how to make it functional, quiet, and decent looking without breaking the bank.
If you scroll down this link there's some good step by step photos.

The fiberglass and widened front are on the back burner for a while along with the cage. If I pull the trigger on anything next, it will be the walk thru and an engine rebuild. Just excited to get her back down to Mex in the meantime. I attached some photos of the latest (and hopefully last) bearing incident as well as the boxed out and carpeted bed I made.

Re: 1990 Ford150 4x4 "Bajamobile"
So after hours of thought onthe walk through design here is my take. I think the biggest issues are going to be keeeping the body from tearing itself apart and getting a good seal where the shell meets the body. I think the best way to do it would be to attach the back of a bronco to your existing cab. It would be a decent amount of work however I think the end result would be ideal. you would have a complete steel to steel attachment of the front half to the back half of the truck as well as factory seal from the cab to the shell. If I were you I would wait to do anymore cage work until you have the end goal set.
