Tools, Spares and So On?

Post by 4WPRusty »

Go Fast Toys need extra parts onboard. What do you haul in your Bronco and why? Share pics if your tool rolls and packed rigs. Maybe we can compile a list of must have gear, tools and parts and make it a sticky.

I don't have any pictures of my old rear seat mount and rack but I always carried 2 spare u joints, gallon of coolant, 2 quarts of oil, 2 quarts of trans fluid, cap and rotor, a couple spark plugs, tow strap and clevis, floor jack, cooler and spare nuts and bolts. Also a spare belt, radiator cap, and spare hoses.s
I'm just here for the views. It helps me feel wanted.

I ALWAYS have my Milwaukee 1/2 impact, and a full battery. I also zip tie 5 lug nuts to my cage. The other thing you should always carry is jb weld or steel stick. It WILL save your at some point.

I personally think the list on the phone is a good idea so it can be added if something comes to you while on a trip or just while wrenching.

I just want to add, pelican cases have gotten really cheap, luckily for me i use them for my work tool boxes so i just converted a spare into use for a truck tool kit. I always travel with my milwaukee 1/2' impact, and now i have the M12 3/8' ratchet, basic hand tools, a volt meter, basic electrical repair kit with butt connectors and some spare wire. I do need to get better and carry addition sensors, distributor etc.

Drove my '96 in its home in Baja for something like 16 years and never had to replace parts. Yes I had broken stuff like power brake booster and front wheel bearings and sure enough I did not carry spares for them. It gave me comfort to have spare oil/atf that was never needed. I had a big pit box full of of things. Stuff that that got used regularly was my my tire plug kit, also my CO2 tire filler, recovery strap for helping others. I carried two spare tires for quite a while and after a while I got rid of one of them because it took up to much space. Yes the wheel bearing stranded me for an overnight in Matomi and it was a big deal to get back to my house in San Felipe. That repair took a while to source an new spindle and get it from the states. The saving thing about that event was my F350 and my flatbed trailer and help for others.

Some things mentioned above were carried and not used but did not include any spare parts. Important stuff like first aid kit and a full and complete tool box were always carried. I think I went thru a half dozen tool boxes due to the beating the boxes riding in the back of the truck. I finally settled on an ok metal box with drawers. One thing I do recommend is a functional electrical kit with all the stuff that I could think of including crimper and amp meter. Never needed it but is sure helped others. It won't take up much room.
Most important for Baja travel is water and food. Nowadays I carry a refrigerator/freezer and a 2nd battery to power it. A cooler was discarded due the unavailability to get ice for my overnight camping trips. Cold drinks are sure a luxury as is food that is not spoiled.

Paul, does the cooler have a third battery system or run off the dual battery style set up?

It is 4" diameter and about 16" tall. That seems to be the size I see on most rigs. Just carry one.
Mounted on the drivers seat runners under my legs for quick access. Look on Amazon for the holding bracket

Runs on 110v or 12v. We use it as a freezer in the garage when not in the rig.
I have a 2nd 12v battery for our multi day camping trips and it is nice to not have the start battery go dead. Both the start and the aux battery are group 65. The aux batt gets charged when driving and is isolated when camping and is dedicated to the frig.
The frig has a compressor that needs power because it does not contain a source of power such as a battery. Uses 7 amps when the compressor is running. On a hot day it about 80% of the time and on a cool day about 30% of the time. Never had the aux battery not keep the thing operational.
