Ditching the PSOM Ideas???

Post by VintageIronFab »

Hello All,
If you wanted to ditch the PSOM but wanted to retain the factory ecu and the E4OD what seems to be the best method? ZERO and I mean ZERO desire to get a trans controller.

If there’s a way and I think there has to be, please let’s hear it!

Thx,
Matt

Just hook it up behind the dash.

Why get rid of it?

I think Tchajagos is just suggesting leaving it hooked up, but hide it where you can't see it and it doesn't bother you.

Naw it’s gotta go completely or not at all. Someone figured out the ABS module delete perfectly and it would be awesome if the same would work on the PSOM.

I think you can get rid of the PSOM completely by putting a speed signal interface in between the VSS and the ECU/ECM/PCM, something like this:

See that’s the whole thing- I don’t understand the system well enough to figure out what factors the ecu/trans needs needs .

You have to have something that takes the vss signal input and outputs a signal that the transmission needs based on gearing and tire size (8000 ppm). The psom does just that. Why replace it with an after market unit when you have a factory unit? They’re like $10 at the jy and came in about every ford vehicle of the era.

You don’t need the whole instrument cluster, just the speedo. Make an enclosure for it and mount it somewhere under the dash. Or use the speedo as a speedo and get one less gauge, it’ll look funky though.

Ok I think I had this idea that was Joe Hobo with a extra speedo cluster someplace but I stand very corrected. I’m guessing you basically just butcher up a stock cluster - how small can you make it? Can you remove the face and needle?

This is the only part of the cluster you need. It unscrews from the cluster. You can remove the needle and face plate if you'd like. You need the buttons and ODO screen to program the unit.

I ended up cutting up the white plastic piece that the gauges screw to and saved only the piece that the PSOM screws to. This made it easier to seal up. I then electrical taped the whole thing to try to keep the dust out. This was only intended to be a short term fix. Long term I plan to make an enclosure for it with mounting tabs and mount it to the cage behind the dash.

This article (google "Ford VSS, its hosted on a cummins forum) gives a pretty clear description of the VSS layouts used over the years:

With you changing your truck over to OBD2 can you program it out? I get that may mean standalone tranny unit

This is honestly the best idea - I may lose sexy sano points but it’s a legit easy cheap work around. Could it be potted in epoxy? It’s funny how easy this changes things! Now I just nr

There is zero difference in a obd2 speedo than the others. I’m not sure who came up with that idea they are vastly different but it’s all the same.
