Cracked Pass Side Beam ??/Rant

Post by VintageIronFab »

Hello All,
I sold a 82 TTB front end to a guy and the pass side beam has a crack it. He has called a company that’s known and is being told the beam is junk- kicker is the beam is being plated. All I know is this is a scam and a revenue generator. Why would a beam being plated that has a crack be an issue?? I’d love to hear the rational on this....

.....crack that can’t be fixed even with plated beams

You can grind it out and weld it up but is the beam bent? Maybe they don’t want the liability. Hard to say.

It’s a common crack point.

That beam is of course bad- a small crack and saying the beam is bad when it’s getting fully plated is simply nonsense. The liability argument is crazy since you are modifying something for off-road use thats far far fri the oem design.

Seems to be a weak point on the beams. If it’s cracked it might be bent as well. More than likely.

Ditto. I've welded several of these over the years with success. Never had one crack again after welding. Weld it, put the filler plate in and call it done.

So the fab shop that's supposed to plate the beams won't do it because of the crack??

Yea it’s a scam- they’ll tell you a bunch of what sounds like legit reasons and it’s just bullshit. This shop told me they only like to use new beams and how the quality blah blah blah - I got scammed $100 - I’m over it but it’s still a scam.

This is my guess. When a business is putting their name on a product, why would they take a chance? Welding it might sound like a good way to save you a few bucks, but if they start fixing it, then find other issues and say it’s going to cost you more than if you’d just started with a good beam, you’ll probably be unhappy, too.

Maybe it can be chalked up to a miscommunication. It’s possible that they’re not explaining their methodology well. It’s also possible that you’re just not picking up what they’re laying down.
Sho nuff,
SteveG
