Wide rearend on a budget

Post by tactical328 »

What's the best way to either widen a stock 8.8 or swap to a wider rearend for those of us that can't afford a full float currie etc. I tried the search function and didn't see a whole lot. Any input is appreciated guys!!

Wider on a budget is a tough deal. There is a 9" van axle that is slightly wider (I think like .75" a side or something small) that some guys swap in. You have the cost of the tone ring setup to deal with at that point though.

A "thinking out of the box" way to go wider would be to get a corporate 14 or something similar off a dually. It'll be full floater with big, 35 spline axles and a 10" ring gear. You'll have the cost of hubs in converting to 5x5.5 pattern though, plus a drive shaft changeup with the pinion yoke, and then also figuring out a parking brake if you want one. After all that it may be wider than you actually want.

Wait for someone to sell a wider rearend cheap. It happens so be prepared for when it does so you can jump on great deals.

Depends on how wide you want. 9.75 is a great option. Dutchman can make new shafts with 5 x 5.5 lug pattern if you want the width of the F150 or raptor.

Rear end from a Dodge.

Spring perch width is the same on a 2nd Gen dodge (and probably 3rd gen, a quick google search for whether or not a 3rd gen axle swaps into a 2nd gen would answer that) and WMS is 71-72. VSS is availible in at least some 2nd/3rd gen rams because I know I've seen a tone ring listed for that application. The Dodge rear ends come in 5x5.5 and 8x6.5.

E-series is another option. IIRC they're 68-69ish WMS but the spring perches are several inches wider (~40" frame vs 36.25" on a F-series/Bronco). The E-series rear ends are availible with disk brakes and the bolt patterns are 5x5.5 or 8x6.5.

I have an E-series full float D60 waiting around to be installed. If I see a Dodge D70 pop up at the right price before it gets installed I'm gonna bail on the D60.

Wide rearend on a budget

I’m with vintage on this one. Unless Yu have big money to spend keep it stock with. The performance going wider is not worth the money unless you have extra to through around

I don't think the perch distance you mentioned here is correct. I have a pic of the 92 -96 bronco frame dimensions I downloaded from Steve83, a former member of FSB. The frame width from the B-pillar body mount rearward is 954mm or 37.55". So if I remember correctly the perch distance is the same for both the E-Series and the bronco.

Rear ends between F series and broncos are a bolt in swap. Many people have swapped in 10.25s. Rear ends are not a bolt in swap between F series and E series because the perch width on the E series is wider. All three use the same with leaf spring hangers and all three use 3" springs (let's ignore 2wd F150s and DRW trucks for now).

I don't recall the bronco frame necking down before the rear axle but it's been a long time since I've looked at anything other than trucks and vans.

Is there any reason people dont use a D60 in broncos?

weight typically. It's been done though.

Pretty much same answer for it as my 1st reply at the beginning. Just swap out corp 14 for D60.
