Carb Air Cleaners for Desert Use??

Post by VintageIronFab »

Hello All,
I know many of you all are factory fuel injected and this doesn't pertain- if you out there or have seen- what's a popular air cleaner do the carburetor or throttle body injection guys out there? I would think you'd want a really rigid lid/base to keep the crud out along with the tallest you'll could get. Do the typical 14" units seem to rule the day along with a 4-6" air cleaner? I think I've seen some air boxes on some Offroad trucks that are pretty cool but those are all very custom. If you have any examples I'd love to see them!

Thx,
Matt

Worried about sucking in dirt? The ultra fine elements sold by Donaldson or Amsoil use nano fibers for very small openings. The result is cleaner air and less horsepower at RPMs higher than highway cruise. The racer big round air box often seen use an internal swirl vanes to throw dirt away from the Donaldson element. The high restriction of the element is often dealt with by using two the the big so called air boxes. Good luck fitting even one of these things on a Bronco.
The ultra fine elements for a carb are available in the 14" size . Maybe you can stack two of them if you have clearance.

Most of the guy I know running carbs/tb still run UMP/Donaldson style, just with a carb to 3-4" duct adapter

Those carb adapters do worse things to your dyno numbers than the UMP's.

I've seen so me I think round air filters that have 2 mounting studs. When I was talking air boxes I'm talking like nascaresque stuff. What height 14" round typically fit the factory hood?

No filter gives the best dyno numbers followed by K&N on top of the carb.
No dirt into the motor costs HP. Some racers don't care about dirt and use K&N to catch the rocks.
Stacked 14" Amsoil might be the best compromise???? Measure and buy accordingly. Cut a hole in the hood as seen on the dirt track racers.

14" AEM dry filters with a foam wrap.

Dual Donaldson/UMP's are the best solution, You just need the right carb topper. Needs to be about twice the diameter of the UMP one. Also needs the inlets 180* apart.

Anyone know how many inches thick typically fit under the hood of the obs and FSB on the typical carb equipped trucks?

Depends on your intake manifold and air filter base, 351/302. 351 with a dual plane intake 4" filter shouldn't be a problem. Single plane may require a drop base.

If I used this elbow it would save me so much bs but I have heard they kill power. I don't want to have gone through the nightmare of using a warmed over V8 for it to just run like shit!

I bought a R2C and it seems nice but I've got zero miles on it.

Been reading up on R2C and I'm really leaning towards using their carb filter and drop base with a foam pre filter rather than dual UMP's on my 427w
