Which came first, chicken or the egg (coil over/ bypass )

Ok, looking at all the cool photos I see it both ways. With an engine/shock hoop mount like Solo's engine cage which shock should be mounted up front ? And Why ?

The bypass is placed in the position with the longest stroke between the two shocks

My set up is 14" c/o behind beam so later i can run a 16" bp in front that is also how tanks bronco is set up and worked great
