I have thought the 9 inch with a currie or dutchman housing welded into the beam would be slick. Gearing a differentials would be limitless. Only thing standing in my way is cubic dollars. Combine that with Roberts new brakes and dana 60 hubs but for a dana 60 spread on the ball joints - bomb proof.

solo is actually doing exactly that for currie right now, saw it laying on the floor last time i was in there haha

Easiest way to put the 8.8 mounting pattern in the beam and get proper ring gear clearance and protection?

I am currently north of Kansas city on the Missouri side. This will mainly be a Colorado rig with the occasional snow day use here. Maybe if I'm lucky it will get out west some.

Ok, fun acts.

Diff weights.
8.8 51#
D44 70#

Axle diameter
8.8 1.325 Exploder 31 spline
D44 1.275

Axle centerline to diff face
8.8 1.675
D44 1.804

This means the OX diff cover will sit up 1/8" on the inside of the beam, this will make a few things easier. The diff cover is 12#. If you were to use a regular fabricated diff cover there would not be any real gain over a over a plated and gusseted normal beam.

I started but didn't finish (yet) a similar project. I was going to retain the D44 and it was going to to in a Ranger. I was gonna use U joints on the long side (where the phase would cancel out most vibrations) and a CV on the short side. If I was gonna modify the beam to fit a different 3rd I would have started with a 9.75 IRS but I'd be surprised if the 8.8 gave you any problems in that vehicle.

I would ignore steering other than making the basic geometry not too terrible, build it a lot of adjustment and then tune it how you want it.
