What are your goals for the motor? Are you planning a rebuild or just bolt on upgrades?

Just minor upgrades, pulling it to change rear main seal and do some other small things. Figure now is the time for any power adders.

Re: 96 351w Mild Build HELP
If you're going to tear it down completely, now would be the time to do an 87 octane 393 stroker builder.
However, you don't need to pull the motor to do the rear main seal. It can be done by dropping the trans and transfer case, which will be significantly easier than pulling the motor.
If you leave the motor in the truck to do the rear main seal, the easiest upgrades will be and Edelbrock Intake, BBK 56mm throttle body, heads, and a set of headers.
If you're set on pulling the motor, Car Craft in Upland has a very fairly priced machine shop for boring and honing blocks.
I need to do my rear main seal as well. I am going to take care of it whenever the need to upgrade my trans arrives. Hope this helps with you decision process.

Thank you, I'm pulling the motor so I can do a lot of other little things and clean the engine bay.
I have headers and a bbl throttle body.
I was thinking about the edelbrock intake along with heads and cam but looking for input from someone that has this setup.

Re: 96 351w Mild Build HELP
There are plenty of EB guys who have mildly uilt 351w. My plan is to do a top end upgrade, until I can build a bulletproof E4OD.
Here's my list:
56mm BBK
Edelbrock Intake
TrickFlow 170 Twisted wedge heads
Bassani Headers
Crane Cams # 444212
Then dynotuned by Powertrain Dynamics in Huntington Beach.

3k is a decent budget for bolt ons. Is that your max budget all in? Giving us a number makes it easier to choose.JamesGrossaint wrote:$1650 heads

96 351w Mild Build HELP
Never doing this I don't know what's right or wrong... I think 3k is a lot for a couple bolt obs compared to buying an ls with 350hp.
I just want feedback from people who have don't something.
Every forum I see " I plan to" and that doesn't help.
If someone says I run this combo it cost this much and it's worth it I'll spend the money.

Ryan above & Hollander are your best bet for mild build like your talking.
I don't think "buying an LS" is a proper comparison. There is a ton of time and money involved besides the cost of the motor when doing a swap.
I've try to skin this cat a million different ways on paper and the reality is to get a little extra power cost a good chunk of money and to get a lot of extra power is really expensive.

Agreed. Things you'll need to do an ls swap:cs_drums wrote:Ryan above & Hollander are your best bet for mild build like your talking.

Motor
Trans
Transfer case
Wire harness
Ecu
Guage cluster
AND a ton of miscellaneous smaller parts to make it happen.
Ask "The Goonwagon" how much his LS swap ran him.

Ryan,
What are a few option for these motors?
Stroker with stock heads?
Heads and cam?
I've looked everywhere but there isn't good information.
I'd like to spend 2k but if 3k make it I'll do it.
I have headers, mad ignition and a bbl throttle body already

Re: 96 351w Mild Build HELP
Ok well I have edelbrock heads, upper and lower intake manifolds and headers, with an e303 cam. SCT dyno tuned on 87 made 211hp 289ft lbs. I have great time with it and it's more than enough for what I do. All in my set up just in the hard parts is in the 3k range.
Yes I would do it again and yes I think it's worth the money. I've got a forged internally balanced eagle crank and Happy beam rods sitting on the shelf just waiting for my current motor to have the slightest hiccup and I'll put another 3k into my 408 build.
For me I always want my truck to get better and if I can do it 3k at a time, you bet you ass I'd do it over and over.
How bow dah??

Ryan,
Do you have the head part number? I know the intake is 3881.
On the cam guys mention it's a mustang cam and changed rpm higher. Is there another option maybe or is this the go to for most?
