Gas Tank Skidplate

Has anybody cut/fabbed/designed a real rear skid plate/tank holder for a bronco? Pics? Anybody locally making one? Im not trying to reinvent the wheel but the OE is inadequate, JBG has one but shipping is outrageous. I saw one custom one Tommy Trego built but its not a turn key solution I could just buy. Curious to see whats out there. If I end up designing and building one it will be something I am looking to make a dozen of and it will be something worthy of real use. Steel frame with bolt on skids out of 3/16 or 1/4 aluminum.

I would prefer just buy something that is well designed and turn key since im lazy these days...but necessity is the mother of invention.

Tommy's was the one on Mikey's bronco - right? If so I'd assume they have the cut files for those saved & could cut you another. My guess is his may be the closest you find. I haven't seen any other options out there, but then again I haven't really looked much either.

Yeah I chatted with him about it and his files would have saved me about 15 minutes of measuring and modeling, most was hand fabbed after that, not a production type set up that just bolts in. It was def nice and why I talked to him about it but I thought it was turn key when I sparked the conversation. If I do one it would be turn key and id guess in the $4-600 range. You would be able to sit the bronco on a rock with it, jack it up from it if you had to etc...I was hoping somebody already made it.

I need one as well. My stock tank and skid are super tweaked. Keenan on here had a nice looking one made. I just lack the shop I used to have so if someone pre fabs one I'm interested.

IMO not only do you need to make a bomb box for the tank, you also need to replace the flimsy stamped steel cross members. here are a few photos of the one I fabed still on the bench. 3/16 plate, so we can rock it in the rocks.

Didn't realize Tommy's was mostly hand fabbed/adjusted after the plates were cut. You may end up having to go the route most do = fabbing. I like the simplicity of a tube structure tabbed for a 1/4" aluminum plate. Not super fancy but it's strong, it works and the aluminum skids are replaceable if you ever really nail one.
I'm not sure there's enough of a market for anyone to really make one of these, unless they were a bronco owner making one for themselves & happened to save the files. And that leads us right back to the start of this thread...

I'm just curious what people are thinking a legit skid plate that bolts to the factory holes is worth? Personally I don't thing it needs sides on it but more like a factory piece only hella strong.

Do they offer it retail or just custom Fab?

I'm pretty sure they offer it retail. I know they have fixtures so so they build it off the car.

That one is clean for sure & one of the tube ones I was thinking about when I mentioned them above. I think that one is custom though as it looks to bolt partially to the bumper bracket. CHO should know though as he works there. Kris - send Cho a PM on here or maybe a call to Johnny would quickly handle it.

I know the front is bolted on through tabs welded to the frame, but that shouldn't be that hard to tackle

looking at that photo looks like it has another mounting tab by the shackle hanger

Looks like it. If I remember right there are a few more pics of this & how it works in Bray's thread.

sorry i am late to the party gents.

Richer came up with a really slick solution for me- and yes, the gas skid ties into the rear bumper they fabbed for me.

Jonny and CHO making cool stuff- as per usual...

while we're on the topic of skids- figured i'd post up what they came up with for the belly.

5 points of contact- front crossmember, radius arm pivots and the framerails. stout.
