Steering dampeners tend to try and band aid fix steering problems. Fix the actual problem and you don't need one. If your getting a wobble look for worn components or a mismatch in steering geometry. IE, drop pivots without drop pitman arm or vice versa.

They generally don't limit wheel travel since there's not a lot of up and down movement where they mount to the tie rods. Like Philo said, they're usually just a patch for other issues. If your front end geometry is good, they're not needed. When put large lifts and huge tires on these things (anything, really), you induce and exaggerate bump steer and wandering and make a steering damper a necessity.

Putting crossover steering on these trucks reduces bump steer and makes the geometry even better.

People tend to try and fix mosquito bites and all kinds of ailments with Windex too. I dont think that means it isnt a useful product for its original intended purpose.

Steering dampers are useful for solid axle setups with Jeep style lift kits. Not many go fast GFBs are lifted like that. On the TTBs they are seldom seen. In fact I bet nobody has seen such? Anybody seen a TTB with a damper?
My wifes Jeep has one, but I have no idea if it it needed. My 72 EB has one and it was needed due to the tall lift and the stock short wheelbase. And it still drives like it needs more damping. Such it is.

My F250 has a Rancho one on it. If the bolts weren't so rusty and I was so lazy, it would have gotten taken off all ready......

Every setup is different, but off the top of my head it's approx 30", 54", 49"

There is enough to build it in a 20 foot section of tube... You need a little more than 10 foot.

its not the lengths that are important, its where the bends go that are important.

gotcha on that... I have to pre-fab/purchase the material etc... becuase the truck is buried down in baja without effective steering and I am up here in the states. I will template everything out in the dirt on my back at the pick a part saturday, but having some rough measurements will help the planning/purchasing of all the stuff I have to gather up... Ideally, I would score some used pitman/swingers or find a less expensive solution to ordering up new parts from the known giants in the industry... but I have a time/money problem...

Single swinger steering update

Post by mesquito_creek »

Since I trolled this board hard and asked quite a few questions, here is how it turned out.
About $500 in steel and rod end bearings.

1.25 .120 dom tubing for the tie rods
3 - 3/4 rod end bearings with 5/8s mis align
3 - 5/8 rod end bearings
Grade 8 bolts fine thread and metal top locks
One stock salvaged pitman
misalaineous plate steel

150 hard pre-run mile in baja so far without issue....

Are the relay and tie rod off the pitman in single shear? Is that bolt shanked out all the way?
