Steering Systems - Stock, Superunner & Equal Len. Crossover

Post by cs_drums »

I think it's kinda one step forward two steps back ward. I think time and money would be better invested into a single swing steering. This may make the stock steering stronger but it still gonna have terrible bump steer

I'm gathering parts for swing steering and I just went through this thread without really seeing mention of it, but what are you guys doing for bolting the outer heims to the knuckles? Someone mentioned Fodrill pins once that I saw but their website isn't working. I know a lot of you double sheer the knuckles, so once you do that do you not worry about the taper in the knuckle? With the heim steering on my current A-arm Explorer kit I have a machined tapered pin. Also on the same kit, I adapted a uniball to replace the lower BJ by drilling the taper out of the knuckle and welding in a straight sleeve, so that could also be done for steering. Thanks.

Not sure how to edit my post but I want to add this picture from Solo's site, and they've welded something to the knuckle but make no mention of any modification to the knuckle or any special tapered hardware.

I drilled out the taper and pressed in a sleeve for 5/8" bolt.

I drilled and reamed for a 3/4" bolt....cuz I was too lazy to machine a sleeve, but it works great with a 7/8 heim. Less time and no misalignment spacers.

Glens Single swing setup has minimal Bump steer. Its all about the geometry and it took him quite a while to get it developed. The biggest disadvantage is the curved rods which IMO have to have the rod clamps to keep them from drooping. Even then Shock rubbers still have to be used at the road ends.

Just finished all 16 pages of steering thread, and it looks like the ambulance steering comes down to these three pieces:
baja-chris wrote:You have to use them as a set because the diameter is larger on the ambulance parts.
RH Outer ES2396R
RH Adjusting sleeve ES2012S
Connecting Tie Rod DS1073
Must use all three of these if you use any of them.
All of the other pieces remain as OE replacements.

Can someone please confirm?

with stock pivot brackets (as you would with cut and turned beams) use a stock pitman arm.
with drop pivot brackets (as you would with a typical lift kit) us a drop pitman arm.

Even with a 2.5" lift Chris?

It probably does not make much difference either way. If you have more travel than stock with the Y-arm tie rod design then you are going to get a lot of bump steer as you droop out much beyond what the OEM shock config allowed for.
I'd be inclined to run a stock pitman with a 2.5" lift, a little less stress on the steering box I think.

I flipped my tie rods on the spindles on one truck with positive results. Seems to work for about 3" drop pivots.

Do you have to drill out the taper or how does that work? Did you have trouble tightening the nut on there without the taper?

You could also use a stock 4wd Ranger/Explorer Pitman arm. I don't remember the drop vs the fullsize arm but it's 2-2.5". I think I scrapped the extra I had but I'll let you know if I find it.

I have taper reams. I re tapered the hole from the opposite side. I can not remember if the taper was 7 degree or 10.

I'm glad mine is RHD, the steering isn't far off being ok. No need for upgrades other than a tierod flip:
