Here is a thread on Ryan McCormick from RJM Injection Technologies situation

Seattle FSB wrote:Here is the poop on the 5.0L Knock Sensor:

The Knock Sensor is a signal generating device called an accelerometer. It detects engine detonation (knocking), and converts this frequency signal in a voltage. The sensor consists of a piezoelectric element mounted in a threaded metal housing. Vibrating the element generates the voltage signal. Special construction makes the element only sensitive to the particular engine vibrations associated with knocking.

When spark knock occurs, the Knock Sensor produces a pulsing electrical signal. This signal is put through an amplifier and then sent to the EEC. The EEC then immediately retards spark timing until knock is no longer sensed, or up to a maximum 8° retard. The engine will return to normal spark advance after the MAP sensor detects a 3-4 in. Hg. change in engine vacuum.

In summary, the Knock Sensor assists the 5.0L PCM in allowing the timing to be advanced to the edge of detonation and then backs it off slightly for maximum performance and fuel economy.

Ryan McCormick from RJM Injection Technologies offers the following 5.8L perspective:
Why doesn't the 351 have a Knock Sensor?

1. 5.8L is a stronger block.
2. 5.8L has a better firing order than a standard 5.0L from the 1980's.
3. MAF does a better job of calculating fuel ratios, which helps prevent lean conditions.
4. It saved Ford some money by not including 1 of everything found on their parts self.
5. Not all engine designs have a frequency that is easily identified as a "knock" from the other valve train background noises.
Keep in mind that a 5.0L is a different beast having smaller mass, operates at higher rpm’s and has different harmonics which a Knock Sensor can identify.

I hava 418w installed in my truck. I am in the middle of wiring up a mass air conversion. My question is about what headers to run. I have a set of MAC equal length mustang shorties and a pair of headman long tube headers. Both have 1 1/2" primary tubes. I am leaning towards using the long tubes. Is it worth running the small primary tubes or am I better off selling both sets and getting 1 5/8"? All opinions welcome...

Primary sizing should be based off of exhaust valve size.

Among other things.....

But to answer the question, the long tube headers will be much better than the shortys.

Because they generate a stronger exhaust pulse on the lower rpm end of things which increases torque there.

Got her running, it is getting close to test drive time!

This motor is a 414w , windsor sr. Heads, small cam, weiland stealth, holley 750, 10.3cr, forged pistons. It sat and the gas went bad, this is the first time i got it running decently, more tuning to come, i got egt installed, in hopes i can really get the carb and timing nailed.

It has a comp cams custom grind, with grind #FW x4 254H-11.

Intake lift .477

Exhaust lift .493

Duration

Intake 210

Exhaust 218

Lobe separation 111.0

I have actually driven this thing now, and can say that the motor is perfect for this application, I have 3.55 gears with c6 and there is no need to put lower gears, this thing has so much bottom end it is insane. There is no need to rev it over 4500 rpm either. My bronco is wayyyyy faster than stock. I have a 2wd titan which is pretty fast, and ran a 14.8 at the drag strip, and the bronco wipes the floor with the titan.

Ya done 393w......will have it in a few weeks

port matching intake and cleaning it up along with port and polish on heads.....

he started the bottom end today 393w all forged internals, custom grind cam, should be a torque monster we will see. torque converter stall? I know 2400-3000 but whats the correct number boys?

lets be real our ford tranny eat up power so if you don't set the drive train up, you will not see the outcome you want.
