Rear shock shaft protection

Post by tcm glx »

Hey guys,
Just curious, what if anyting do you all do to protect the rear shock shafts from picking up all the rocks and crap from the front tires?

Anyone here using "dirt bags", some sort of shock boot, or those gnarly TT Mud Flaps?

When I raced stock full and had to stay under the bed with the shocks, I used sections of old 3" heavy canvas fire hose clamped around the body and open on the bottom, it worked great.

I run these boots I picked up at McKenzie's.

This is a 2004 4Runner 4WD...and actually a pretty good application for the shock boots because the front wheels throw all kinds of roost at the rear shock shafts. I pitted my first set of shafts in fine style, which toasted the seals.

I dont run anything on mine as of now, I am considering adding dirt bagz front and rear. I like Dave's suggestion as a low cost alternative. With that being said, I have not experienced any damage on the shafts when my shocks were located under the bed, but I think that its a good idea.

Someone recently posted where you can get boots for 2.5" shocks. I think it was a thread here but don't remember which.

Does that work on a 2.5" shock? If so, those are dirt cheap!

I will second that. Bill has been around forever, I attended a seminar that he did for VORRA nearly 20 years ago on setting up cars that has stuck with me ever since.

Has anyone done trophy truck style mud flaps.... was looking underneath the Bronco this weekend, and thought that might be a quick and easy hit. I am thinking of using some leftover rear inner fender skins from the Bronco, mount them up to the rear shock hoop, so they sit right in front of the rear shocks..........

you aren't using ALL of my inner fender skins are you Tony? Rubber sheet might work better for this particular application.

That's how I plan to do it.
