Ford 9" from an '84 in a '95

Post by Vintage Iron Fab »

Hello All,
I have a simple question-- here in Phoenix I have seen a glut lately of early 80's half tons and broncos and many of them have complete 9" rear-ends. On half price day they are cheap and my rear end re-sold on CL would about off-set the cost. Is there anything that would preclude bolting one of these up to a 95 FSB?? I am wanting a lower gear, gears/bearings are cheap and have the tools and know how to do a R&R on a 9". I am just trying to think why I would want the 8.8??

If anyone knows a huge snag in my grand plan please let me know.

Thanks,
Matt

The speed sensor on the rear 8.8 of your '95 might pose a slight problem. There are kits to solve this problem though.

I just did this a month ago. I got a housing from a '78 and put it in my '95. I had the output flange on the xfer case machined locally for a lot cheaper than the kits you can get. Just divide the 108 teeth on the 8.8 sensor by your new gear ratio to get the number on teeth you need machined. Round up or down as you see fit. That was the only real cost besides a new driveline.

It's not shown here, but I fabbed a bracket that holds the sensor from the 8.8. It's about 3/16" from the flange.

I feel like Tom Hanks in "Big" -- sorry but I dont get it??-- What I am unsure about what I need to do concerning the transfer case-- are you basically manufacturing a "tone-ring" for the t-case??

he had the out put flange machined to mimic the tone ring and then mounted the sensor on a tab to make the circut.

so the tone ring from the 8.8 is gone and the t-case is modified to the same dimensions as the 8.8 tone ring-- the wiring is changed and all is good? Where do you buy the kit from--I do love machinists BUT sometimes you get an honest price and sometimes it cheaper to just go buy the "kit".

Google Kurt LeDuc at California pre fun, or Brea auto electric. They both make a kit.

In case anyone is following this-- I just got off the phone with Curt-- the "kit" is on an exchange basis only-- you send him the gear and $300 and he ships the flange and bracket back to you --ready for 4.56-4.88's with 35-37" tires.

Curt LeDuc's # is 951-845-8820

This is for Phoenix0783--
The machine shop that did your work obviously seems to know what they are doing-- do you have their info and what did they charge for the work? I can easily fab that bracket-- so if the savings are enough I have no problem firing up the bandsaw or my welder--its how they pay for themselves :-)

See my thread, "Lucky Bronco #3". I put an early 80s rear in my 93 Bronco.

Your driveshaft will be too short unless you have a flange made for the 9".

VSS will need to be installed somewhere.

Brake lines and e-brake cables hook right up.

Leaf spring pads are correct if used with factory wedge block.

The guy that did it is in Corvallis. My dad grew up with him so I think we got a bit of a deal. I don't have his contact info, but I'll call my dad in the next couple days to get it and what he would charge to do it. I can't imagine it would be even close to the $300 LeDuc charges.

Well my thinking is that if this guy you know is in the $150 range he would probably get tons of business- if he was going to do one for me I would get two of them from the picknpull and ship them to him-- one to mess up and one to be perfect-- or simply one to do and one to sell :-)
