How do you all prep your rigs before going out.....
so, thought this would be a good subject What do you all do before going out for a race, pre run or just general desert trip. Looking more for a list of things to do on the rigs on this website, not necessarily race rigs, but more the street driven prerunners .

my prep:
for a long weekend is mainly oil/water fluids.....
air cleaner/spare foam wrap oiled in baggy.
grease everything including front wheel bearings.
touch up chitty flat black paint job with cheap paint.
check spare for air(it sometimes leaks down...)
prepare my wife at least one month before trip and start cornholing money so she doesnt see the large amount of gas money empty the checking account.

Grease zerks
check for cracks
fluids
air in tires
new air filter
once a year or 1500 prerun miles whichever is sooner

Re: How do you all prep your rigs before going out.....
basics, each trip:
investigate funny noises and vibrations from previous trip.
look for cracks and leaks.
check fluids.
air tires.
on regular intervals:
change fluids.
major preps:
as needed. it becomes obvious when needed based upon the "each trip" inspections.

Pretty much what I do, except for race prep, I have a detailed worksheet to do prior to the truck hitting the trailer for a meet.baja-chris wrote:basics, each trip:

Pretty much what has already been said already..Fluids, air cleaner cleaning, grease zerks, check tires and a visual under the hood and and chasis. I always go through my tools and recovery gear in the back as well. I take it for a spin down the road before I gas it up too since I really don't drive it much just to listen for noises etc.

On the Pro-truck we use all crush nuts. But we also use a yellow paint pen and mark the end of the bolts and side of the nuts for a quick visual for future loosening problems. We put a small dab of this real tacky black silicone also on the threads of bolts that can loosen.Put some clear silicone on and around tranny plugs to help avoid a loose plug there.keep extra fan,Alt. belts, zipties, tape, extra fluids, tools, one of those magnetic LED lights.Just stick it somewhere where you will remember it,s there lol.On the end of trailing arms for example we pack with grease and then wrap the whole end with black duct tape. Then cut a hole for the bolt to go through it (only) Lasts alot longer that way then leaving a dry Heim.Seems to stay clean.just a few ideas.
Re: How do you all prep your rigs before going out.....
Found a guy in SF that has a concrete ramp and a hot power washer. I use him whenever I have to drive in mud or after I loose a rear wheel bearing. Nice and clean under so inspection is easier.
Of course tire air is required every time I drive the thing, at least until I get the new tires on it. Never needs engine oil, but gets oil & filter change once a year. The front diff pinion seal leaks and the trick master has been a constant leaker. Supposedly a new top seal is on the way?
Now after all these years I did a tuneup and now it wont work - Sigh. I will get other broken things fixed & upgraded by fall. Meanwhile the Jetta will have to do for the B500.
Several times a season I remove the tranny skid and remove the unwanted junk. and look for leaks. Front skid need stuff removed frequently because I need a mesh over the air intake holes.
Both CVs need checking for loosness even if the dreaded clicking is not present (lesson learned the hard way Ha).
Did you know it takes all day to get the rear window down then hot wire it to work? All because I had no smarts on how to get the defeat switch to function. Try that some time with the back loaded with 300 marking stakes and a full pit box. I was surprised I could make it function in a 10 hour day. Sigh. Now i know what the problem is and another long day should put it back to stock??? I may even leave the hot wire switch in place. Kinda neat to open/close the window without a key.
Lots of abuse and little maint and I get to pay the price.

Re: How do you all prep your rigs before going out.....
a quote of mine when somebody was talking about how cool their socket/spare/breaker/impact set up was and I told them I had the same setup but forgot the cooler of beer on accident:
"..doesn't matter how well thought out, cool, or easy to use your shit is, if somebody forgets the beer at camp nobody is having a good time on a prerun.”
I wouldnt even call adding beer as part of a prep...its like putting tires on the vehicle, you just do it.

Actually all joking aside, I believe you owe it to the group to do the best prep you can. Anybody can break stuff on the trail and that's just part of the deal with off roading. But we should all try not delay the group with break downs that could have been avoided. I'm sure we've all camped, traveled, rode with "that guy". I for one do my best not to be that guy.
