Shock companies normally go by travel rather thank collapsed / extended lengths. Every manufacturer uses different end caps, rod ends, and body lengths so the extended / collapsed are different.

as Philo already said the shaft travel is what manufactures use for general size, each collapsed and extended size will vary as a genral rule SAW has the shortest collapsed length, fox/King/bilstein are usually pretty close. Then of course you run into "special shocks" in my case I have a set of quad bypass 12" that have 14" shafts. In essence a short bodied 14'' while this can create some other issues it is something to be aware of both for creativity as well as knowledge when buying used.
