Making an E4OD a Shiftable 4 Speed??

Post by VintageIronFab »

Hello All,
Just like the subject like says -- has anyone successfully made a E4OD into a shiftable 4 speed trans? Further-- have they taken a Winters shifter and modified the gate plate so that you might have a micro switch to turn off/on the OD with the shifter. So basically you hit the shifter to go from 4th gear to 3rd?? Probably a dumb idea but it would be nice to hit the shifter to accomplish turning off the OD vs the stock button.

thx,
Matt

Culhane has something for this. It's pricey though .

Making an E4OD a Shiftable 4 Speed??

I mounted the button in my console right below the shifter. I contemplated putting a momentary switch that would engage with the shifter but I rarely have over drive on other than the freeway. It didn't make send for the extra work.

I thot the Winters style floor shiftier kept the stock tranny guts, meaning it works just like the stock column shifter.. No reverse shift pattern like everyone loves for a C6. Obviously a separate switch is required for OD lockout. These switches are DIY and the best ones are adapted from the homebuilt airplane sticks with a button on the top or side of the shifter. Of course a dirt simple method would be a switch on the dash.
After all these years the stock setup works pretty darn good once you understand how the trans is designed.
And you do not have to stick with a Winters clunk - clunk style. B&M sells all kinds on shifters that can be adapted to an E4OD.

I am not sure what you mean by "shiftable." You mean like full manual control?

The stock OD button is a momentary switch. Using a toggle switch on the shift lever won't work correctly.

I used the USShift on my Bronco loved it.

It was electric manual and tune-able.

I have the Quick1 for the E4OD. You can put it in "Manutronic" mode and then upshift/downshift with whatever kind of input you like... buttons, switches, paddles whatever. Works great. The detailed manual is avail for download on their site. I see they now have a new "Quick4" box, but I can't honestly see how the original could be improved much...

As an aside, the Quick1 also makes it super easy to hook up a speedo if you're having any issues with nonOEM equipment...

That's what I was talking about - being able to shift thru the 4 gears independently.

Your C6 is not electronically controlled like the E4OD.

I have a crappy b&m shifter in mine at the moment. I can shift my e40d all day long and just hit the button on the dash for 4th. It's not like the newer truck that will jump to second when its in 1st.

Can anyone speak to the ability to use the Quick 4 controller with paddles mounted on the steering wheel? this just seems like good clean fun to me.

I was looking into a Quick 6 controller for a 6R80 conversion. They did offer a paddle shifter option when you put the transmission in manual mode.

I like the idea, since I plan to run a Art Carr shifter and it does not have the manual shifter button on the shifter like the OEM shifter does.

I’m running the quick 4 with an art carr shifter. The O/D button was moved to a steering column plate that I built. I haven’t seen anything in the software that tells you that you can run the E4OD in a manual mode. You can shut the O/D off and hold 1st-3rd but not 1st-4th.

As far as I'm concerned-- my shifter knob in conjunction with an Art Carr is the closest one can come to easily and safely shift the E4OD out of OD and into third -- when I say safely I mean in the dark blind folded you can easily and quickly find the floor shifter on your vehicle. Add my transmission bracket, it's by far the easiest and cleanest way to mount and route the shifter cable by going thru the factory transmission firewall hole.

Best alternative is dump the shitty E4OD and run a 4l80 with a manual valve body.

It doesn't make it a manual 4 speed but it allows you the best ability ti down shift with a no look from 4th ti 3rd or back-- on the column is clumsy and on a panel in the cab as well. My set up isn't the cheapest but it's the best way to install a floor shift E4OD at this point.

The 4l80 is the best option but it's thousands more money and let's face it my skill set is way higher than the average like yours is as well. Lots of guys can do bolt on swaps but many aren't their own fab guy.
