fiberglass hood.

Post by cuz_im_CR »

my hinges are ripping out of my firewall and i have a glassworks fiberglass hood i am going to install. my question is how do most people mount their hoodpins? i have the hood that has the complete double wall and uses the stock hinges. i only need to mount 2 hoodpins but im not sure what the best way to do it would be....

thanks,
chris

Autofab is the only shop that I know makes a Bronco/F150 Specific hood mount kit. I would think someone else has come up with something too, but who knows..?

I think most people end up attaching to engine cage tubes.

If you're looking for a more ghetto approach, here is what I did on one of my old Rangers when I removed the factory latch. I used a generic hood pin kit from Mr. Gasket, Moroso... one of those. All I did was bolt the pin where the factory threaded rubber bumpers used to go, drilled some holes in the hood and riveted the Stainless washer to the paint side of the hood. To keep the hood from rattling I laid some of the leftover original body mount bushings right over the pin.

This is the best picture I could find of it (lower left).

So the hinges are trash because you are driving beyond the Broncos capability. Install a cage and there will be a tube from the dash tube to the coil towers. Have a plate welded to that tube and to the firewall over the hole. Then you willhave an attach point for the hinge. This kind of cage is another example why the body needs to be welded to the cage.
Please get a proper cage.
Like someone said 4 hood pins will do while you deal with cage details. But then the glass fenders need cage attachment also if they are to survive.

well from what it looks like this is a common problem with broncos. ill tell you what paulw, you pay for my cage and rental car and ill have it done. deal? otherwise that is something that will have to wait as i daily drive this and don't have time for it to be down while i cage it.

the hoodpin kit from autofab was 100$ shipped. the fiberglass hood i got from a friend for free so i dont know how much it cost. i heard that glassworks no longer makes hoods like this because the glass failed where the stock latch goes.
