Reset computer for smog- huge loss of power
Reset computer for smog- huge loss of power
So, my truck failed smog and had an analysis done (1990 F150 with the 5.0 and AOD). We got it to pass but had to reset the computer. The thing is reallllllly slow now and the shifting points are awful. I think SWP had tuned up the engine via the computer a bit in the past to make it run more efficiently. How do I get this thing back to how it was before? Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks.

The aod is not computer controlled so the shifting points that are awful is something else. I agree with the above, take it back to SWPSC150 wrote:So, my truck failed smog and had an analysis done (1990 F150 with the 5.0 and AOD). We got it to pass but had to reset the computer. Computer's in those are only tunable via a chips that are always attached. When you say reset do you mean you unplugged the battery for awhile?

The spout connector hasnt been left out, has it? That would jam the timing at 10 degrees and it would go like crap.

Re: Reset computer for smog- huge loss of power
One thing you might try... Disconnect the battery for 10 mins, re-connect and let idle for 10 mins. The disconnect of the battery will cause a dump of previously stored settings and this will force the computer to re- evaluate all sensors. Don't rev it or anything, just let it idle, you'll hear the timing speed up then slow down, buzzes and clicks then it will almost stall. Just after the nearly stalling point the reteach of sensors should be finished.

I'm thinking SPOUT connector also...
Re: Reset computer for smog- huge loss of power
So it is the spout connector, how would I fix this? Can you replace the unit or clean it somehow? Taking it back to SWP isn't an option, unfortunately.

Re: Reset computer for smog- huge loss of power
I'm assuming its a port for diagnostics that should be normally jumpered out via the grey part. Someone else want to confirm?
Re: Reset computer for smog- huge loss of power
To elaborate a little more, I'm thinking it might not be a loss of power as much as the transmission just constantly wanting to upshift. I live on a decent size hill and even when I mash the gas it doesn't wanna stay in the power band, just upshift. Same goes when I'm getting on the freeway. If I come to a stop and put it in first, run through the gear, and shift into drive, it seems to do alright. If I put it into OD it's a slug. Again, it wasn't running like this at all before the computer reset.

My smog buddy told me that they can take that thing out (RMC pics) and it helps it pass. Might check there first.

Re: Reset computer for smog- huge loss of power
The spout is just a jumper used to lock out the computer controlled timing to allow the timing to be set. As long as the gray part is there you are good.
Just for the hell of it check the fan clutch. I put a transmission in a truck once because the fan clutch was locked up... made it shift like crap and was way down on power.

Spin the fan. Is it dragging real bad or does it spin freely?

It would be hard to turn with the engine off.

Re: Reset computer for smog- huge loss of power
When the center section of the fan (fan clutch) heats it expands and locks up forcing the fan to turn with the pulley till it cools and retracts internally. So cold it should spin relatively free and when the thing gets hot you should hear it enguage.
That's crazy philo I could see it happening though.
