What Carb to run.

Post by 78Class3 »

I know most of you guys run EFI, but for those that run a carb on their prerunner/racer, what do you use? I've heard such mixed reviews all over the net about this one or that one, that its tough to make an informed decision. I've got a Barry Grant Deamon 850 on it now and i'm fet up with it and gonna go another rout. Any suggestions for a racer? Thanks

BTW: I've got a barely used 850 Deamon for sale :D

A lot of guys seem to use this company for off road modified carbs with good results.

It would be worth a call to them to at least get you going in the right direction. Maybe they can work with your carb as a start. Lots of things that can effect how the carb works too, like fuel pressure regulator, filters, air inlet design messing with vent function etc.

What problems are you having just tuning/power or flooding in the rough?

I reccomend that you call C&J, I did and I have been super pleased. They will take all of the info from you about the motor and the truck and build a carb for you.

Going this route will save many hours and lots of frustration.

Anyone have any contact info for C&J? Their web site doesn't seem to have any. THe Deamon I have now is almost brand new and is what the engine was dyno'd with but I can't get it to run for crap. It keeps loading up and dumping fuel into the engine while the truck idles. I called Deamon and they want me to send it back to them so they can rebuild it. Hell, Its only got like 3 hours of run time on it!

That's a standard Holly style issue. Unfortunately a holly style carb is what works well off road. What size motor do you have? An 850 is quite big and overcarbing causes that issue. Do you have the correct style boosters for your cam?

C & J Engineering ------ Project Design Form

13195 E. Imperial Hwy. Whittier CA 90605 Ph. 562-946-1388 Fax. 562-946-0330

taken from their form section in website. A fail on their part for not putting contact info on every page..

Flooding at idle is just a crap in the lines Holley problem it sounds like or you have the floats adjusted wrong or too much fuel pressure. Can you adjust the fuel level down so it is below the site plugs and it stay there during idle. Or if you have a electric pump you can check it with engine off. Pull the needle and seats out and clean them and blow out the lines from Fuel filter to carb. Make sure you arent using teflon tape anyplace or silicone as that will always find a way to the needles. Check torque on fuel bowl screws as if loose allows leakage between passages on metering blocks sometimes. Check fuel pressure. Do you run a regulator? I would do all that before sending the carb back. A holley style rebuild isnt much of a process. Hopefully it is just a needle seat and foreign object problem.

The engine is a 400M built to 427, the 850 is what the engine builder put on it and dyno'd it with so I assume it is or was set up properly at one time. The floats are set right at the bottom of the bowel, the fuel pressure is running around 7 to 7 1/2 psi. I'll have to check some of the others and will definitly give C&J a call. I'll have to grow some stones and learn to work on this carb. haha

If it sat for more than two months there will be crap in the bowls. Modern fuel has no shelf life.

That's for sure. It also has so many additives that it eats and ruins a lot of the materials used in carburetor kits. My Bronco always ran perfectly until it started to sit for weeks at a time.

I talked to John at a C&J yesterday. Nice guy very knowledgeble. He's going to crunch some #'s for me and start there. In the mean time I picked up a Holley 750 DP for now and put it on and it is running much smoother, no backfiring, no smoke, no gas smell, a totally different engine right now. I'm gonna change the plugs, oil and gas and get things all up to par. John has some very interesting things he does with these carbs from the sounds of it.

Ollie, I may be interested in the future. I'd have probably been all over it 3 days ago.

Thanks for all the feedback guys,
Scott

john is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to anything fuel related! we ran his carb on the 8 truck for the entire time we owned it and it never bogged or burped, not even in the rough!
