trail toolboxes and organization

Post by Seabass »

I've got a couple tool bags that go in whatever truck is being used and its about time to re-do my set up. What do you guys carry and how do you keep it organized and secure where it wont kill you in an accident?

Soft tool bags like the zippered ones from craftsman, etc. along with mastercraft/beard/prp/etc. padded/zippered bags. Bags can go in boxes that get strapped down, or can be strapped down themselves.

That's pretty much the existing setup I have. Old makita and Milwaukee bags held down with a ratchet straps. They lack an ease of organization witch isn't horrible but it could be improved upon. I'm sure there's guys on here that have some trick set ups.

I'm sure there are too. You just asked what we do and that's my method - haha. I will note to use different bags for different things. Like metric sockets in one bag, SAE in another (if you carry both), wrench wraps of both metric vs. SAE, screwdrivers in one bag, electrical in another, hammer, big crescent wrench & channel lock/pliers & stuff like that in another.

Makes for a few bags, but also makes finding things easier if you know what is in what bag. Smaller bags get piled into one larger tool bag or box.

I also ended up with a few computer travel bags from my dad he wanted me to sell on craigslist. I sold a few & kept a few for the truck. They have lots of good pockets for misc. crap & I keep my jumper cables, poncho, zip ties & other misc. tools/crap I always have in the trucks in them. Helps with organization a bit & gets a bunch consolidated into one bag that can go under or behind a seat or strapped down somewhere.

I saw these at OSH today. I didn't look long as I was in a hurry but they seemed pretty sturdy and stacked pretty well. They're similar in size to the Front Runner boxes I got and MUCH cheaper.

We've had a couple like that and as the age the plastic gets brittle and cracks

These were a lot thicker than the normal plastic box but who knows what the long-term durability would be. I still like my South African ammo box clones but at less than half the price. even if you go though them every couple years, it'll take a long time to spend as much....

About 12 years ago, I came across a crazy-good deal on clear plastic totes with integrated, folding lids. I don't remember how much they were, but it was around $4 a piece. I bought 30 of them and put EVERYTHING in them. They've died over the years (usually from me dropping or throwing them, but they've served us well and even got us through a few moves. I think we're down to about 10....

No such deals to be found these days.

Just saw this at Depot this morning. Who cares about the handle and the wheels but the boxes are nice and strong. They nest securely and have two slots over the top for ratchet straps to lay. I measured the OA combo and its 22" wide at the wheels, 18" deep including the wheels and 34" high.

Great price on the Rigid boxes. My old pelican cases were that much for one.

Cargo/tool storage solutions.

That ridgid one looks awesome. Bolts/nuts/small stuff on top. Tools middles. Recovery gear/straps/larger stuff on the bottom and they all lock onto eachother and can be tied down.

Current Cargo Solutions

Pictured here is a medium load in since it was only for KOH (in other words, stuck close to basecamp, did not need communications product to support racers, and help was not far if needed). Mexico trips generally means three more boxes.

Boxes are from Front Runner and will be updated with their new Pro version.

Tie-down anchors and straps are MAC'S... love their Versa-Tie products.

Great set up! I did exactly the same thing (Mac's and Frontrunners) but put the tie down strips parallel to the cargo area with one on either side and one in the middle behind the rear seat latch. My bronco is multi purpose- pick up truck, home depot/dump, preoverlander- so I wanted the most options for strapping things down.

It’s not a full load out, but here are the essentials that we pack for an off-road trip.

As I said in my last post, I’m updating to the Pro boxes. I’m also looking for some some low-profile fluid containers to use instead of off-the-shelf quart and gallon jugs, which would allow me to use the standard height lids on the fluids and spares boxes, freeing up space for one more Front Runner box.
