Cruise control actuator/cable

Anyoje have any feedback on telling when the cable that mates with the throttle pedal cable is bad? A couple months ago it began working sporadically and noticed the mount wasnt tied to the point on the bracket on top of the manifold. I pulled the cable and it's coming out from the interior liner on it's own. Is that supposed to happen? It feels like it needs tension to stay when you set cruise but not familiar with it. Any insight would be great.
