Fiberglass friendly paint/body shop in San Diego?

Post by nubreed71 »

Just like the title says...I'm looking for a paint/body shop that can paint my fenders. Preferably one that's got experience with fiberglass. North county is preferred, but I'm willing to drive a lil bit if the work is good and the price is right.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but there's no special trick to painting fiberglass vs steel. Sand, prime, paint. I've painted a couple trucks and a few different sets of fiberglass fenders and I used the same prep procedure and materials. Now if you're looking to get a bunch of fiberglass body work done then I would look for someone that's done it a time or two.

I'm with you Kel...pretty sure it's about the same. The main reason why I ask is that I don't want to take the fenders in there and have them say, "oh, fiberglass? That's really hard. That's gonna cost extra..."

I believe there is a bit of a primer difference some use due to the gel coat, but that depends on the place/painter and their experience & preference.

My dad gave me a can of a specialized primer to use before I rattle canned an old set of fenders for the ranger. He had said to always use it when painting glass. He's been in the industry for about 30 years or more & designs many of the resin blends his company uses, so I trusted him & just went with it. Paint shop guys may very well differ in what they want to use.

What about Mcneil Racing/Perrys Fab N Fiber? I've heard from multiple people that they do go work for a fair price.

My understanding is that fiberglass or plastic that a flex additive is added to the paint. Based on the type of paint used and the material it is going on will determine the primer used.

I was thinking something similar RE Perrys/McNeil racing. They certainly have a lot of experience with glass! Might hafta give them a call.

I've got a great guy up by me in Costa Mesa area (by John Wayne airport). I get compliments everywhere I go about the job done on the glass. Its a bit of a drive though for you.
